just watched it, and thought the first section was ordinary by Lean's standards, but I really liked the rest, once the trial starts, and loved the brilliant monologue from Andre Morell at the end, best thing of the movie by far. Ive read that Lean was never satisfied with this movie, and I can see why to a point, but Id say overall its not a bad movie at all. The HD streaming version looks quite good. |

![]() ![]() https://viavision.com.au/shop/direct...tion-407-412/# David Lean is a name synonymous with sweeping epics, the Academy Award-winning director behind The Bridge On The River Kwai, and Lawrence Of Arabia. He was also known for intimate drama and comedy, hand-selected by playwright Noël Coward to bring his most famous works to the big screen. This set brings together his first six films, including four collaborations with Noël Coward, and two adaptations of beloved novels by Charles Dickens. In Which We Serve (1942) This Happy Breed (1944) Blithe Spirit (1945) Brief Encounter (1945) Great Expectations (1946) Oliver Twist (1948) Packaged together in a Limited Edition Hardbox, the set also includes Part One of an Imprint exclusive documentary on David Lean. 1500 copies only. |

Just received the Spanish Blithe Spirit and In Which We Serve
The transfer of Blithe Spirit is fabulous and looks really sharp and lots of detail. In Which We Serve seems very dark to me because you can hardly see detail or actors when action scenes take place at night The 1080p French remaster of Oliver Twist due out on 4th February has been delayed indefinitely (so that still leaves the 1080i edition) Just for info Warner Bros also do a double DVD set of Hobson's Choice and The Sound Barrier with the same Canal transfers as the individual sets https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/Hobsons-...ier-DVD/45715/ |

There's also the region-free japanese movie-only (no extra's) "Mastered in 4k" Lawrence of Arabia.
This japanese "Mastered in 4k" edition has the movie split over two discs to obtain a higher bitrate => 34.85 Mbps on average as opposed to the 22.25 Mbps of the regular edition. I own this edition because I wanted to own the best "Lawrence" available picture-quality wise. It looks fabulous. But since I do not own the regular edition (with the movie presented on one disc) I cannot comment on how the two editions compare. ![]() |
