Default 80GB PS3 Sales up 960%!!!

http://news.softpedia.com/news/80GB-...ii-68816.shtml

Quote:
What? The 80GB PS3. Had it been the 40GB PS3 that was doing well for Sony we'd not be so surprised; but for the 80GB SKU that everyone's been running away from, because of its high price, to be up 960% in sales on Amazon.com's rank is very strange. Scary even for competitors Microsoft and Nintendo. Other news says that demand for Bungie's Halo 3 has lifted Xbox 360 sales past Nintendo’s Wii. Has something major happened that we haven't found out about yet...?

First things first. The most unexpected news of all, regarding sales figures for consoles of this generation, is of course the 80GB PS3 going up 960 percent in Amazon.com's sales rank - thanks ddps3.com. Not 300 percent, not 600 percent, but almost a frikkin’ 1000 percent. How is this possible? What could lift the PS3 – and most importantly, the expensive version – so high up in sales in the last 24 hours?

What? Has Halo 3 launched for it and we didn't know about it? Even if that were the case, the 80GB PS3 bundle is still packed with a copy of MotorSorm, so everything you're getting for the $499.99 is that and a SIXAXIS.

As for how Microsoft is doing with their respective machine, they owe everything to Bungie's FPS, Halo 3. According to thenewstribune.com, "Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 outsold Nintendo Co.’s Wii for the first time this year in September as surging demand for the software maker’s "Halo 3" title helped lift industry console sales."

The website mentions that N.Y.-based researcher NPD Group provided some information on Thursday according to which, "U.S. retailers sold 527,800 Xbox 360s, topping the Wii’s 501,000," also reporting that 119,400 Sony PlayStation 3s had been sold in stores, bringing total hardware sales to 124 percent.

Quite a turn of events, wouldn't you say? While we can all understand the Xbox 360's success, we'll keep our ears to the ground for more clarification on the huge demand of 80GB PS3s within the last 24 hours.
I hope this lasts a while. I love Christmas time! Tis the season to spend all your money!

Oddly, the sales numbers are from September. This is during Halo 3 release month, but before the PS3 price drops. The #'s now that Halo 3 has been out a while and the Playstation prices have dropped should swing things around considerably in Sony's favor.

960%

Whoa. Apparently the price drop made quite a difference. I bought one yesterday, saved around $70 since it was a "NO TAX" sale.

Hmm... figures. If that's the case, then I guess we can expect another spike in the sales.

Where does it say september sales? This is only an increase from 24 hours ago. The article was posted today. That means the PS3 saw a 960% increase since yesterday.

If you click on the link it says on the bottom to keep checking back as they are going to investigate the reason behind the PS3 sales surge. Could be a mistake or could be early Christmas shoppers. (or maybe Oprah gave away free PS3s at her latest taping)

I just visited Amazon.com and on the bestseller list for video games PS3 80gig is #17. The X-box Elite is #20

The 60gig PS3 is #37 while the X-box 360 $349 version is #87

Looking good! God I REALLY hope the PS3 can sell more than the 360 this Christmas, what a fantastic turn around that would be! Christmas 2007 was always going to be the first big test for sales with all three consoles available. Ok, the Wii is likely to be the big winner, but pleeeeease let the PS3 be a comfortable second.

Sony needs a good sales period to woo back all the developers that have gone multi format

The Trojan Horses are in full effect!!!!!

With every new PS3 is a new Blu-Ray supporter. Even if we say most the PS3 that are being sold this X-mas are to kids, what kid could resist a copy of Spidey 3, Superbad, DH4, etc.?!

Default It's the price

I think Sony just hit the right price...

I was in Walmart the other day and was checking out Blu-rays and games. Twice (in the 5 minutes I was there), someone came by and said "look at that ...they dropped it to $499!!!".

It just seemed that $500 was the threshold for them and that they didn't actually have any idea what it used to cost - just the impression that it used to be really expensive (but now they can afford it).

I know that the price drop was what drew my roommate into buying an 80GB PS3, he bought his the day the price drop happened.

Well if it was September I am very surprised as I read on a gaming site (either Gamespot or Gamepro) that September sales were dismal, something like 119,000. I was trying to find the article, but haven't yet.

I think a lot of people possible knew a price drop was coming so they just waited it out. Now they can snatch it up.

I don't think it's as much the price as it is that a buttload of good stuff is coming out for the PS3 finally. The price cut is just a bonus. =P

I plan on getting one here next week when Guitar Hero 3 comes out.

40GB PS3 preorders sell out on Amazon

Quote:
Sony's new 40GB PlayStation 3 sold out in advanced orders at retailer Amazon.com on Tuesday.

The new 40GB model, which includes a Blu-ray Disc drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a wireless controller, and a copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray Disc, will sell for $399 on November 2nd. In addition, the latest version lacks backwards compatibility with PS2 games, which was found in previous models including the 20GB, 60GB, and the limited compatibility in the 80GB.

Customers can receive an e-mail alert when the product returns to availability.

Sony last week announced the 40GB SKU in addition to a price cut of the 80GB by $100 to $499. In July it cut the price of the 60GB SKU to $499, where it will remain until all the stock is sold out.

The new retail strategy will likely spike sales of the hardware and help Sony overall this Holiday season.

well the 80gig sells for $499 with motorstorm and another game here in Canada, so its basically the best value no matter how you look at it.

But I think the 40gig is best suited to get people into Bluray, since it comes with a high-profile, high PQ movie.

Has anybody played a PS2 or PS1 game on their PS3? I was wondering if there is any difference since the 80GB doesn't have the Emotion Engine.
