Default Do you open your steelbooks?

Reason I ask is I've got the French 2012 1st edition steelbook sealed and I want to watch it.... however im worried it will devalue it. If it actually has any value..

Or do you just get steely's of the ones you already own

I open 95% of my steelbooks. The 5% are of duplicate movies which may or may not have different artwork. Sometimes I just buy duplicates to get 1 inch closer to being a scalper. But really, i'm just a guy who likes steelbooks. My Australian "2012" is sealed, because I watched the UK one.. just an example.

To have 1 copy of a movie and never watch it seems a bit silly.

Movies are made to be watched, not kept wrapped up in a case

Every single one of them. I buy films to watch them, not to sell on, stare at in a cabinet or hide in a vault.

I open all my steelbooks, even if they are collector ones that I pay over $100 for (i.e. Future Shop Transformers 2, Star Wars Clone Wars Netherlands) I don't intend to resell them, I do put them in the plastic protective sleeves though.

Ok OP you should know you just influenced me to open my last 2 (unopened) steels AND my target Dark Knight Rises digibook. Ha ha

My Italian Captain America and my French Star Trek

The best part is my Captain America has some slight damage under the card.

To be honest if this was a few months ago, I would have been pissed off that I pad so much for a damaged steelbook, but I'm actually okay with it today.

I got a "slightly" dented Transformers steelbook last year and after I tried to "fix" it - I made it so much worse.

Anyway - warning to those who don't open them - there is possibility that they are damaged, so sell them while they are still sealed if that is your end goal.

It looks like it got pressure on the corners and it showed up on the back and front. I'm thinking the whole box these came in had the same damage?

That Transformers situation was so unlucky mate, that having that happen on Captain America must've been a real PITA as well

I know you don't look at it value wise, so i'll just say it's not nice to have the 'premier' pride of place steelbooks damaged regardless of whether you open or keep them sealed.

I open just about every steel I but and wouldn't buy a steel if I didn't plan on opening it unless there are multiple exclusive versions, like say TDKR or E.T., in which case I open the digibook and leave the steel sealed. I also haven't opened the empty Disney Viva Boxes but that is only because there isn't anything in them.

If you really like the movie (sounds like you do) then open it and watch it, why would you want to sell a film that you really really like...

Its up to you but its like saying i am not gonna open my Last samurai steelbook... its my favorite film and i need to watch it and enjoy it

I see little point in buying movies and not watching them
If you dont plan on watching the blu-ray then save your money and stick to watching a naughty download, rental or netflix it

If I want to watch it, I open it up and usually only buy one copy. If I plan on keeping anything sealed for the 'collection', i'd rather buy a 2nd.

I know that might seem selfish or whatever, but that's my choice to do so and after all i'm paying for that ability. Some choose instead to buy another movie rather than double dip.

The movie 2012 is not that sought after. As a steelbook it will hold its value at best. To get a profit out of it would be a neat trick.

Just throwing figures out there guys, but I imagine less than 2% of steelbooks are ending up as investments. Most of those are blu fans exclusives.

In 10 years time? Who knows? With 4k, possible encryption memory card technology.. The disc media well may be on its last legs, and so will the packaging that goes with it. One thing is for sure, we are in the golden era of movie ownership, its never been this good and it can only get worse from here.
Those are some really good points. No one back in the days of FS Iron man would have guessed that they would go for $200+ a few years later. If everyone (who cares) is holding onto their copy then eventually no one will be the one to "care". There may be a few really rare valuable steels 2 years from now but since none of us know what they will be - there are much better ideas for investing.

I guess I'm glad now that I didn't pay $90 for that Thor yesterday...

I open almost everything of mine. I double dip when it comes to foreign releases of films. Especially with digibooks. We get shafted quite a bit here in the states (imo) ex: Alien Digibook (Japan) Iron Man DigiBook (France) etc I have the "Drive" digibook sealed, it is region locked and I bought it because I loved the movie and thought the digibook was a must have for me And I also purchased Sin City Collector's edition from South Korea and that is sealed as well, but once I get around to watching it I will open it. I display many of my movies if I feel they are worthy of doing so. But I will never buy a movie and keep it sealed if it is the only copy I have. After all, it is a movie. And i'd like to see it

Whats with people being a bit dickish and saying it's silly to keep them sealed...it's just a preference.

I've watched majority of the films I've bought as Steelbooks...the reason I don't open them is because I've already watched them. The whole reason I buy them is because instead of buying DVDs/standard blu rays of the films I like I may aswell buy some nice steelbooks I can sell later on in life.

Even when red ray comes out in the far, far future Steelbooks will be selling because most people buy it for the artwork/design
