Default Is the PS3 noisy?

Hi

I was reading reviews on different BD players because im getting one for christmas and was reading that the PS3 was a very high contender in the running for best BD player. But i have never heard anyone mention if it is noisy when playing blu ray dvds.

I find the xbox 360 to be very noisy when playing dvds and wanted to know anyone with the PS3 does it make much noise when playing blu-ray dvds?

I don't find the ps3 to be noisy at all, in absolute silience i suppose if you tried to listen for it, you would hear the fan. I've heard the new 40gb model has a chip that runs cooler, and is quieter.

Default I have two PS3

the one in the living room with the surround sound i can't hear even when the sound is turned down. However, the one in the bedroom, I can hear it. This one we keep the volume turned down because we live in a duplex and the bedrooms for both share a wall. What I mean by you can hear it, it's not like the 360, which you have to turn up the TV pretty loud to drown out the fan noise. I talking about having the volume turned down where the sound is almost hard to hear. That's when you will hear the fan noise and even then you will hear it, but it won't distract you from your movie. It's really just a soft hum. By the way, this is at a volume of 10-17, so I'm talking turned way down. In other words you won't notice the sound.

I have an early 60 gig model PS3, and yes it does get noisy, noticebly so if you focus on it, but during a movie or game it is white noise that your brain should block out.

I should also add that I live in Vegas where the temp in my house is usually 78-81 degrees so that must have an effect.

If you plan on getting the 40 gig I've seen another thread on this forum talking about how it is whisper quiet, perhaps because of the newer chips (or lack thereof) and newer motherboard. He also lives in a 72 degree house so... I don't know.

while there is some noise from my 60gb, its nowhere near the noise of the 360. and like he said, if noise is what youre worried about, the 40gb is for you. just be aware of what the 40 gb can and can't do compared to the 60/80gb

I have a 60GB PS3 that I have quit using to play back CDs and SACDs on due to its fan noise (I use an Oppo DV-980H instead for that now, taking advantage of its DSD over HDMI feature for SACDs). I don't notice the PS3 noise with movies but I do with music. It only takes about 5 to 10 minutes for my PS3 to get loud enough to hear over quiet passages in music.

I have a 60 gig launch model which I can't hear, no matter what it's doing, from 12 feet away in a silent room. YMMV.

My 60 GB (from lauch) is very quiet playing Blu Ray discs. There is some fan noise, but barely audible if the volume is off, and if you are listening to anything you'll not notice it at all. I don't think this is anything to be concerned with.

One thing you can do wiith the PS3 that is cool.. and put it in another room. The PS3 is BluTooth upto 30 feets, you can get put it anywhere, but a long HDMI cable (monoprice) and you're set. BluTooth is cool for that , it's multi room friendly, i use it a lot (with the PS3 remote) when i use the a/b room option on my AMP and want to skip track..

I had a 60GB ps3 and it was super noisy, had to get a standalone BD player because it drove me crazy. But i am on the third floor of an apartment and it gets really hot up here, at my parents house in the basement the ps3 was super quiet because it was cool, so it depends where you put it.

Default PS3 quiet even with fan

I have my 60GB PS3 in the basement above the fireplace. I also have a continuous PC fan next to and the receiver, which is louder than the internal fans) since I was paranoid about overheating or having to use the internal fans as much (I have the machine on ATC to fold when I am not using it). Standing next to it, I can hear it. I sit 12 feet away and cannot hear it at all.

I've found it's much quieter if out in the open standing on end than in a cabinet - even if the cabinet is open at the front to provide more ventilation. It may explain the variation you see people reporting.

My advice is going and buy it blindly without any question and then you will notice how there is a big difference between PS3 and your XBOX when you compare them even playing games or Watching movies in any kind.

My experience with PS3 so far after eight months tell me and convinced me how PS3 is Gorgeous and Monster at the same time.

I have a PS3 and a Xbox 360. The PS3 is quiet like a ninja on shag carpet, while the Xbox sounds like a table top fan.

Ive owned the 60gb , 80gb and currently own the 40gb.If you are buying for movie watching the 40gb is the way to go. Its very quiet and runs very cool.
I used mine for 8 hours straight watching BR and SD movies with zero noise and zero heat...It stays very cool at fan level 1.
