Blu-ray Samurai

The gang that ran Birmingham's Small Heath district named after their caps which had razor blades sewn into them. The series got off to an excellent start thanks to tight pacing, evocative settings and a quality cast led by Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill. Accents were a bit shaky, venturing as far as Black Country with a bit of Liverpool but nothing too offensively seterotyped. This could have been a true epic crime story if it had covered the thirty years of gang wars that raged across Birmingham but that would have required a commitment beyond the BBC's limited finances, instead the series focuses on a neglected period of British history, the aftermath of World War 1 where the government was terrified of Communist revolution and anyone who appeared slightly subversive was beaten or simply disappeared. The series also scores for representing Birmingham's diverse communities of immigrants. Blu ray is out on October 21st. For more Birmingham crime see the classic 70s BBC series Gangsters or try the book of short stories Birmingham Noir.

It played in my region free insignia player on region A setting, and played easily in my Xbox one. It doesn't play on my PS3 though, I'm pretty sure that's a firmware thing.

Thanks for your response! I'll go ahead and order it then, I'm impatient and don't want to wait for whenever it airs in the US. I can always return it if it doesn't work on my region A player.

Happy it's on Netflix.
More people need to see this show. Some narrative missteps in the last two episodes, but overall it's such strong television. Cillian's work alone is worth the 6 hour commitment. |

12 certificate? Did the show all of a sudden become tame?

It's now been confirmed as an 18. Why they even did mock up artwork with a 12 certificate on it I'm really not sure.
On another note, the last episode was particularly fantastic. I really hope the BBC don't cancel this to make way for more exciting new dramas that they'll cancel after two seasons. No one I know even knows about this show it's so poorly advertised and when I tell them the cast they can't believe they haven't heard of it. I believe it's consistently getting over 2 million in the ratings each week but I'm not really sure what that's worth to be honest. Can anyone enlighten me? ![]() Last edited by NoFro; 11-01-2014 at 11:54 AM. |

Series ended brilliantly. Cillian Murphy was on top form.
Series 3 is a go as well! Great stuff. |

Season 3 to start shooting in September. Tom Hardy to return.
I really hoped the beard Hardy has been sporting recently was the result of filming Peaky Blinders. I was hoping we would be watching the third season by October! Early 2016 it is... |
