Director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) is one of Hollywood’s hottest talents, with an uncanny gift for getting audiences rolling in the aisles. But he’s dissatisfied: he wants to abandon comedy for Serious Statements, and buys the rights to celebrated social-realist novel ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’

To make his masterpiece as realistic as possible, Sullivan naturally has to understand how the book’s downtrodden characters must have felt, so he takes to the road as a hobo, is taken under the wing of a failed actress (Veronica Lake), and learns several valuable home truths about the importance of not patronising his audience.

Writer-director Preston Sturges had an inspired run in the 1940s, turning out some of the funniest American comedies ever made (The Lady Eve, The Palm Beach Story, The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek). Sullivan’s Travels is one of his best: not just hilarious but also truly wise.

Was watching this on on TCM the other day, will be adding this one to my collection. Anything Veronica Lake for that matter.

I'll be picking this up, although I will be waiting for the inevitable drop in price. I love Veronica Lake - I'd love to see the UK get 'I Married A Witch' at some point, would Arrow be able to release that? Or perhaps MOC/Eureka?

It would be awesome if Criterion did a Blu-Ray release of this in the US.
They did release it on DVD years ago after all…

Will definitely be adding this to my collection. Love Veronica Lake, loved "I Married a Witch" which just recently came out on criterion.

Anyone know why this release appears to be delayed, at least if ordered from Amazon, which states that it is "out of stock"?

delayed everywhere , in the official Arrow thread this was posted

on Twitter and they gave this response.

"will be slightly delayed (but not to Sept) due to us trying to secure the inclusion of another extra. Hope to have an update soon"

Arrow have said that they are trying to source an additional extra for the disc which has pushed the release date back but there has been no official announcement of the new date as of yet.

I want to get this movie, but I am uninitiated to the world of movies from different regions. So if this is Region B, it likely won't play on my American blu-ray player? Or my PS3?

No it won't you need a region free BD player.

Wow, that 'stock company' extra sounds like a fantasy featurette I'd dream up! The delay looks to be well worth it, can't wait for this one.

Great selection of extras there. Growing up my sister loved this movie and has been hoping for some nice features as she feels alot of classics are neglected extras wise.

I was hoping that Criterion would release this in the US, but this disc looks great, and it's releasing next month. I think I'll bite the bullet and import this.
