Default Shenmue III - Coming 2019

Shenmue III

Shenmue 3 is the true sequel to the classic open world action RPG games, Shenmue and Shenmue 2. Created for modern platforms (PC and PlayStation 4) and built in Unreal 4, Shenmue 3 will continue the legacy of Shenmue.

With your help, we can #SaveShenmue and rejoin Ryo and our favorite characters on this new adventure!

  • Shenmue 3 will have familiar elements from its predecessors and new fight mechanics to achieve a new level of interactive storytelling.
  • If this project reaches its funding goal, Shenmue 3 will be available on the PS4 and PC.
  • Our ambition is to deliver a Shenmue experience that will draw in newcomers to the series and reward diehard fans with its deep story and rich gameplay.

Where we left off... Ryo Hazuki has made his way to China in search of his father’s killer. There he meets a new travelling companion, Shenhua, and learns of a legend from her village that has foretold their path together.

The story continues as Ryo and Shenhua start off on a new journey that will take them farther into enemy territory, deeper into mystery, and ever closer to their destiny.

Will the mystery of the mirrors be revealed? How is Ryo’s father connected to all of this? Will Ryo track down the Chi You Men cartel and face Lan Di in a final showdown?

Since the release of Shenmue 2, now 14 years ago, I have been greeted by the passionate outpouring of dedicated fans and Shenmue community members wherever I go. They all want to know one thing: "When will Shenmue 3 be coming out?" With the advent of games using Kickstarter during these past few years, the new and now frequent demand from the fans has been, “Do a Kickstarter for Shenmue 3!”

If Shenmue 3 was going to get made, I wanted to make it with the fans. Through Kickstarter, I knew that could happen. Together, with Shenmue fans everywhere, I knew we could build the game that the series deserves.

If we do not reach our funding goal, Shenmue 3 will not go forward. I know that the goal of making Shenmue 3 with the fans, and seeing Shenmue in the hands of gamers all around the world is a lofty one. We are balancing our ambitions for a grand sequel with the pragmatic realities of developing a game of this scale. It will not be easy, but I have dreamed of making this sequel for 14 years – it is time to bring Shenmue back! And to make it come true, it will need the love and support from each and every one of you!

So please join us in making Shenmue 3 – let us grow our community and build a new, exciting Shenmue experience!

Ryo - On a journey to avenge his father.

Shenhua - Raised among the forests of China.

Lan Di - Coldblooded boss of the shadowy Chi You Men.

Niao Sun - Deadly siren of the Chi You Men.

YES PLEASE!

Sony's Adam Boyes has explained that the company is working on getting fans the games they want on PlayStation platforms and that includes the likes of Shenmue and Yakuza.

"When we started the third-party production team, it was born out of necessity. We had a lot of publishers and a lot of content that had come out for various platforms and various territories that weren't necessarily coming to our territory, platforms we'd love to see them on," Boyes told Kotaku.

Boyes explained that Sony are working on trying to get games that have been requested by fans on to Sony platforms.

"We've got a massive list—we're calling everyone trying to get that list as much as possible. A lot of issues come around clearances or intellectual property ownerships and stuff like that."

Interestingly, for Shenmue and Yakuza fans, Boyes says it is those games that Sony are focusing on.

"We get a ton of requests for Yakuza, a ton of requests for Shenmue. We see the lists," Boyes said.

"We have a person that compiles those lists and prioritises based on how many requests we've gotten. And I think to date there's well over 10,000 mentions across like forum threads and stuff like that. So those are the ones we're focused on."

Boyes also commented on when fans should expect to start to see the result of Sony's work getting ports onto PlayStation platforms.

"I would say within the next six months we'll have at least one if not a few announcements to make on that front."

Whether Boyes is talking about the PS4, the PS Vita, or even the PS3, remains to be seen.

I still have Shenmue on my old Dreamcast. It had 3 discs if I remember right. It was an interesting game, and probably inspired a lot of games after it, with its extreme attention to details. Really like the concept of visiting the arcade and playing the actual arcade games, within the game.

I still remember getting stuck on one of the daily tasks in the opening village town, and sadly lost interest but I bet the game had some great things to offer had I gotten past that hurdle. Some new games came out on other systems and that's why I didn't get back to it.

Otherwise, sure, I'd be interested in a new Shenmue to see what it has to offer on PS4.

EDIT: By the way, thanks for posting this info. I really appreciate the part that says a developer actually scoured the internet forums to see how many people might be interested. Good stuff.

Kind of sucks they didn't finish the storyline, but I would buy it again.

Rumours of an HD version of the first two have been going around all year so I wouldn't be shocked to here about a re release.

Word was that they wanted to release the HD versions to test the waters and see if it was still enough interest in the games in order to go ahead with the third game and finally give the story it's conclusion.

Shenmue can be a bit of a grind but Shenmue II's pacing was much better.

Both games would be greatly improved simply by minimising the black-clock load screens.

Thanks. Nice to hear part 2 amped up the pacing a bit.
In Shenmue 1, I don't mind the smaller tasks if they're not requirements to progress, though they shouldn't hold back from the main plot if you forget to tie your shoelaces or brush your teeth or something like that in the game as an exaggerated example (and not actual examples in the game from what I remember).
Still very original and unique for a game so I'll load it up after I hook up the old Dreamcast and give it another go one of these days. After checking out the PS4 first of course.

there were little small tasks you had to do too in II. From what I remember, most you had to do to progress.

I still remember the Book Missions. Where you had to carry stacks of books out of the library outside to certain spots to dust them off. It was timed too.

This announcement made my night. I absolutely loved Shenmue on the Dreamcast. Hell, I imported Shenmue II for the Dreamcast from Japan just so I could continue the story (it had English subtitles).

I went and backed it right when they announced it, I think it was around 3,000 backers when I got there. I really wish they were releasing a physical version for the PS4 but I will take whatever I can get!

Never played those games and I’m not even sure I’m interested in part 3 but I found it kinda funny how the whole kickstarter thing was approached.

It was kind of like if you were standing next to your rich friend asking ME for money when your friend could easily lend you the money. Lol

Still have Shenmue 1 and 2 on Dreamcast packed away. I wonder if they will go up further in value when Shenmue 3 is released...

I'll wait for retail.

2017 is a long ways away & I already threw money at Bloodstaind.

$60 towards a "non" disc version with a box is possible with a Kickstarter (Even Retail) so I would clarify you guys.
