Default How do I watch different components connected by HDMI through AVR?

Howdy. Been a while. Just got the Onkyo TX-NR717 and looking forward to it.

Since my old system didn't have HDMI, I have a noob question that is bothering me: if I connect a BD, Xbox, HD cable, and AppleTV by HDMI through my AVR, and then have a HDMI out from AVR into TV, how do I watch one of them on the TV?

Is it as simple as choosing the right input/source on the AVR, and making sure the TV has the correct input/source (i.e., the HDMI in from the AVR)? (I ask this because the manual curiously says that I need to have the TV turned to the actual component (i.e., BD or Xbox, etc, which doesn't make sense to me if I'm only running 1 HDMI into my TV).

If that's the case, does it mean my AVR has to always be turned on to watch my HD cable?

Choosing the correct input on the receiver is all you need to do if you only have the 1 HDMI cable going from the receiver to the TV

Yes on having the receiver on if the cable is hooked up to the receiver then out to the TV. Unless you can hook the cable box directly to the TV.

Thanks, crazyBLUE. I thought it was that simple, but the odd manual stating that the TV needs to be on the correct input for each component threw me off.

Thanks again!

Some receivers have a feature called HDMI Standby Pass-through which allows you to watch a source with the receiver turned off (in standby mode, actually).
