Default 1080p HD DVD players now at $399 price point!

http://www.halflifesource.com/news/2...ticle10082.htm

Not sure if this was already posted?

I'm not sure how I feel about this??

1. Sony can't claim to be the BEST picture quality at cheapest price as all the sub $400 HD units were 1080i.
2. Hardware is now on a even platform
3. Blu still wins with selection of movies
4. How soon before HD drops below $399

We're def not on defcon 5 yet, but this DOES raise the threat level IMHO.

Who cares? The PS3 is at $400. Its the best machine in either format, period.

I would expect to see $400or less 1.0 players soon anyways.

Ummm, it's still a Toshiba. (really need a puking head icon here, but use imagination for now)

It's the A30, which is treated like the ugly red-headed stepchild (and rightfully so). The only difference between the A3 and A30 is the 1080p designation, and from what I've heard, it doesn't do the "p" very well.

Nothing really to worry about.

The A20/A30 does have a poor 1080p60 implementation. The only good output for the discerning A/V enthuasist is the 1080p24 output which supposedly has been fixed with the new firmware (haven't tested it personally). The problem is most people don't know or care about the difference. If the player says 1080p, they assume 1080p is 1080p, which isn't the case here. I still think with the visibility of the Sony player and PS3 and with the Sony player available for $399 at several vendors, BD will be just fine. Most of the stores I've been in have several displays for BD in plain sight for all to see. HD DVD usually takes a bit of effort to find.

The new Panasonic player lists at only $100 more and is final standard profile. Hardly a significant difference.

I don't see any of the Toshiba prices as a particular threat, and the el cheapo ones certainly aren't.

Until this player can do 1080p correctly, this is a non issue. Closing.
