Default Home (Dreamworks Animation, 2015)

HOME
March 27, 2015

You might remember the "Happy Smekday!" project that was announced by Dreamworks Animation in 2012. Based on "The True Meaning of Smekday", a childrensbook written and illustrated by Adam Rex.

The intergalactic adventure revolves around an overly optimistic (yet inept) alien race called the Boov, who invade Earth in an attempt to escape their mortal enemy, hoping to make this hiding spot their new home. But one resourceful girl named Tip (Rihanna) escapes the Boov’s relocation efforts and teams up with a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons) to save the race after he accidentally clues the bad guys into the Boov’s whereabouts.

The result, now titled Home, will be in theatres on November 26, 2014. Steve Martin, Rihanna, Jim Parsons, Matt Jones and Jennifer Lopez are the leading voice-actors and this alien adventure is directed by Tim Johnson. (Over the Hedge, Sindbad, Antz)

To introduce the world to the new alien race, BuzzFeed presents an exclusive short film from DreamWorks Animation called Almost Home.

Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez in the same movie = will never watch.

Steve Martin is great, though.

J-Lo and Rihanna in one movie is a bummer, but it's only the voices. I guess that could be alright.

This (the short) was in front of the Mr Peabody movie.

It was ok imo, nothing mind blowing, but at least it was better than the feature that followed...

No, it's not alright. I am so sick and tired of these studios voice casting this way. Mainly Dreamworks and Blue Sky that keep doing it.
Nicki Minaj, Drake, Pitbull, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg, will.i.am, and other terrible choices that are simply brought in for the sake of trying to attract the young hip crowd And they can't act otherwise, so hey the least we can do is put them in an animated movie.

I agree. But it won't keep me from seeing the rest of this project aside from that.

The short played before Rio 2. Really cute. I'll be interested to see how this turns out.

After all the bad buzz, that's actually a pretty funny trailer. I don't know why people are embracing the Penguins trailer and are calling this awful when the Penguins animation looks like it's from 2005 and the jokes were also all fished from that era.

The only thing that bothers me is that Rihanna cannot voice a pre-teen or even a teen. She sounds like 30 or something, so that's weird. Bloody Dreamworks can't stop casting random celebrities for their voice actors and actresses. They should have gone for Zoe Saldana or gone for a real casting call...they should fire their casting director.

I think this looks awful. This looks like it has the animation and style of one of those ripoff movies - you know, the ones that other studios made when films like Brave, Planes, and Frozen were out, to confuse parents? (Ie, Disney makes Frozen, and some other studio makes "Snow Queen" -- there were ripoff films for Brave and Planes). Speaking of ripoffs, it looks like it borrows a lot from E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

And, typical of a forgettable CGI film, it has bland characters dancing to a hip hop song and making pop culture jokes, along with - literally - bathroom humor.

The worst sin of all is casting a musical "artist" - who can't act - in the main role. Rihanna? No thanks. It looks straight to DVD and probably should have been, because I imagine this will be another box office disappointment for Dreamworks.

The movie is cool, once again Dreamworks gives us a movie with a lot of colours, it's fun and the voices are good. J-Lo does not have a lot of scenes. The 3D is ok but not necessary again.

I'm not usually a big fan of Dreamworks animated alien themed films, but this new one does look kinda fun and pretty cute in a way It's not out in cinemas over here in the UK til March 20th though (just in time for the Easter half term holidays, same with the release of the Disney live-action Cinderella, the week after on March 27th)

I was extremely skeptical going into this as I felt Parsons and Rihanna were horribly miscast as the voice actors but I have to say, they both did a wonderful job.

I really, really enjoyed this! The 3D was a nice experience as well, lots of cute pop out stuff for the kids, some really nice depth when they were traveling in Tip's hover car.

I also have to say I loved the design of the enemy alien The Gorg, would love to see that in a monster flick.
[Show spoiler]well the body the Gorg inhabits

I have to say, I think this might be one of DWA's better standalone films.

4/5.

I enjoyed it a lot too. Colorful and entertaining. The paris scene was awesome.

I thought Kyle looked a lot like Don from Monsters University. Thats all I thought about when he was on screen.

I took the kids to see this (2D) and they enjoyed it. It was okay to me, but I don't care much for these types of films anyway. It was very colorful and visually appealing.
