Default Ted Turner's colorization of B&W movies

In the 80s Ted Turner was colorizing black and white films when he bought some of MGM's library and RKO's library.

It upsetted alot of people in Hollywood like James Stewart, Orson Welles, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and more and were boycotted it from 86 till 89. The National Film Registry and AFI was born.

What did you think of them?

I say colorize them, and then convert them to 3D.

I can see why it upset a lot of people except for George Lucas who should just shut the f*ck up.

Actually makes the most sense for Lucas when you think about it. He never argued against meddling with the film, he argued that the power should be given exclusively to directors, not Studio Heads.

This has been done to death but here goes, Lucas did not direct Empire Or Jedi, he was the studio head. So yeah, he should have just shut the f*uck up.

Well, I'd also like Smell-O-Vision but that'd just be flying too close to the sun.

I have no problem with it, as long as the original negative isn't destroyed after the colorization process, as well as both version being present on any home video release.

They did that years ago. You could buy "smell-o-vision" (scratch-and-sniff) stickers at a gas station (I forget which chain) for a special week of TV. Married With Children was one of the shows that participated. It would flash on the screen which sticker to scratch and get the smell that the actors was smelling in the scene. The TV pack also came with 3D glasses (red and blue filters) for one of the shows. This was in the early 1990s and I think only done once. The pack was intended for 5 days worth of shows.

And he hired those people to direct his vision. And also did direct parts of both films.

Well he HAD to get other directors. It was part of the deal to get exclusive rights to the toys. But I don't think he did the hiring.

I'm no SE/PT apologist, but Marquand died in 1987 and Kershner gave Lucas permission, for what it's worth.

Plus it's well known that Lucas filmed the Emperor's Throne Room/Lightsaber Duel stuff in RotJ.

And ESB and RotJ have the least amount of tweaks to the film anyway.

Have you all seen "These Amazing Shadows" and all that? great documentary that covered this and about film preservation of American films.

Funniest thing said by Orson Welles a month before his death was "Keep his damn crayons away from my pictures", LOL

Well, we don't see much of them anymore, since after he got his hinder kicked by the Welles estate for trying to colorize Citizen Kane, he sort of dropped the business, and made a big deal of promoting Turner Classic Movies, with its movies, quote, "Uncut and UNCOLORIZED!"

Now, if they'd just show the darn channel in my system without putting it in the premium stratosphere that I'd have to pay $99/mo just to get.
