Question 5.1 Problems with Sony Blu Ray Player

Hi there...

Have had HDTV for about a year - here's the set-up PRE- Blu-Ray

Samsung 5679 DLP TV
Denon AVR-2807 Receiver
Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player
Denon DVD-3910 Upconverting DVD player
Paadigm Reference Studio 5.1 Speakers

Just Bought a Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Player

Up til now, everything working fine...get great 5.1 in DTS, Dolby Digital, etc. from both the Denon DVD and the Toshiba HD DVD with all source material.

Got the Spiderman3 and Pirates Black Pearl BluRay Discs...no matter whether using Optical or the 6 cable analog into the Denon Receiver, nothing but Stereo out of Denon via Optical or analog.

To eliminate the Denon Receiver and the source material as culprits, (suspiscion that BluRay data rates weird)? then played a Guess Who Concert DVD (non-HD) with dramatic 5.1 mix in the Toshiba HD DVD player and verified that the 5.1 audio was fine...then took the optical link cable from the Toshiba into the inputs on the Denon I had been using for the Blu-Ray and got great 5.1. OK. looks like Denon Receiver and cables OK. Then took the Guess Who disk into the Sony Blu-Ray, restored cables and selected 5.1 on the disk option, hit play and had glorious living stereo..not 5.1...went through everything I could find in Sony manual, am pretty certain I missed nothing....

Any ideas?

Related question....

Spiderman 3 looks to have only Dobly TrueHD5.1 for English....on the Sony with my Denon 2807 (which I'm pretty sure does NOT support TrueHD5.1), would my only option (presuming things start working) be to use the analog outputs from the BLU Ray player? Have I missed something in the menu selection of the Spiderman 3 disc? Really would not want to replace the 2807...

Any help would be greatly appreciated....I'm really willing to be a "mixed marriage" of HD DVD and BLU Ray, just haven't gotten BLU ray to work.

I'm pretty "techy"..worked in Broadcast 30 years (was involved in HDTV trials at NBC some 15+ years ago), had zero problems getting system set-up until now...

Thanks

Ralph "proudpeacock" Strader

PS have posted same basic question in BLU-RAY section of HD Forum...

set your bluray player to bitstream (or "auto" if thats the option)...sounds like you may have it set to linear PCM.

you may also need to adjust the speaker settings in the player.

Between optical and multichannel analog, I would use the analog. This way you could enjoy lossless audio. you wont be able to with optical.

(sorry my post isnt more in detail, wife needs my help! grrr)

Talking Thanks!!

Crackinhedz, Thank You!

In my haste to get going in the first place, did not check to see if the "defaults" were really "defaults".....both Dolby and DTS were set to downmix to 2 ch. Once I went through and checked all defaults and set them as should be...GLORIOUS SOUND!!

Suspect I may have a "rebox" (bought at Walmart) on the Sony, but for the $348, I'll live with it....

Thanks again...now for some popcorn and Spidey...

Welcome to the forums! All we ask is that you make sure to purchase BD versions of titles that are available on both formats.

well glad it was something simple to correct...would hate for you to have a disapointing first experience with bluray.

be sure to update the firmware on the player.
