Default HDCP & PS3 Question *Please Answer*

Hey guys, I have a 57" Sony KP-57WS510 TV. It has 2 component inputs, and one DVI input. Im planning on purchasing a PS3, and I understand that it requires an HD TV that is HDCP compliant. I read online that my TV's DVI connect supports the HDCP format, but my question is, will my component connection also support HDCP? I plan to connect my PS3/Blue-Ray player/upscaling DVD player through a component connection, and I need to make sure my TV will work well with it.

Thank you!

HDCP applies to digital data transmission only so it has nothing to do with your component input on your tv since component is an analog connection. Just an fyi, the ps3 component outputs don't support 1080p but your tv probably isn't 1080p capable since it has an older dvi input.

The PS3 will play Blu-ray at 1080i or 720p over component, even though it doesn't support HDCP. It will not upscale DVDs over component. (Silly, I know.)

enjoy

Ok, so I should be able to play games and watch Blu-rays at 1080i fine over component? Also, would you think an HDMI > Component adapter would work to trick the PS3 into upscaling DVDs? Thanks.

I read here http://www.fixya.com/support/p228284...l-16169/page-9 that my DVI connector is HDCP compatible, does that mean I would be able to use an HDMI>DVI cable and use all futures, including upscale?

if your tv dvi is hdcp compliance, yes, you can use dvi to hdmi convertor or cable.

if you feel you don't have enough hdmi port, you can get a hdmi switcher.

It sure does, thats the way I use it. The only problem is that DVI does not carry audio. I use an optical cable to connect to my PS3 to my amp.

Yea, either way I was planning to use optical. Alright, so it seems it's settled. How are monoprice cables?

It says " Can accomodate a copy-protected digital connection(HDCP) to other devices...Compliant with the EIA-861 standard."

All I know is that means my PS3 will be working at full level (except 1080P which I doubt anyone will notice)

Monoprice make fine cables and lots of folks here will recommend them. Do make sure you get the correct DVI configuration to match the DVI on your TV.

How would I be able to tell that? On the top, it says DVI-HDTV port. Also, what it says in the manual I posted up there.

Also, what is HDMI 1.3, and will it effect me?

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Will that cable be good?

just get the cable I linked to (or the one you just linked to)...of course they have different sizes if needed. Thats all you need, no need to worry about anything else.

We're quite happy with the sound system, it sounds pretty nice. Isn't optical a very good audio cable?

Optical is excellent. Dont get me wrong.

But you are limited to standard 5.1 dts and dolby digital. With an HDMI connection you could be listening to 7.1 Lossless audio.

You want DVI-D, either single-link or dual-link will work so the one you've linked to is fine. HDMI won't affect a thing. You're HDCP-compliant, so you're good to go for video.

I only have a 6.1 system :P I understand what you're saying though. How would I split an HDMI signal's audio and video though? (One needs to go into receiver and one needs to go in TV..)

Ok, generalization of all the info learned:

Using a HDMI/DVI-D cable will work on my TV's DVI port with optical audio, allowing me to get 1080i blu-ray, ps3 games, and upscaled DVDs.

Correct?

Thanks guys!

Very helpful :]

Someone on another forum said "Games will be an issue because your tv doesn't support 720p which is the highest resolution of many games. This means that your ps3 will output 480p and your tv will convert it and display it. This is the equivalent of watching an upscaled dvd opposed to watching a blu-ray disc. More and more games for the ps3 are being made with internal converters that will take the 720p signal and convert it so your tv can display it. These games and 1080 games, will play like blu-rays opposed to upscaled dvds."

In my manual it says "Hi Scan 1080: Enables you to receive the 1080,720p,480p,480i digital TV formats." They're wrong right? I want to order tonight :S

The PS3 allows you to output video via HDMI and audio via either HDMI,Optical or RCA.

Sounds like your TV will accept a 720p signal, so nothing to worry about.
