Following the assassination of Nazi Heydrich, Masha Novotny, a professors daughter, hides the culprit in her parents apartment. When the Gestapo take 400 people hostage in retaliation, Mashas father is among those arrested. The assassin, surgeon Dr. Svoboda, manages to escape. While hostages are being executed daily, she helps Svoboda in his efforts to blame the assassination on a collaborator. The only collaboration between Fritz Lang and famed playwright Bertolt Brecht. An Academy Award nominee for Hanns Eislers score, and for Best Sound Recording.

I ordered the Kino film noir DVD box set with Hangmen Also Die!, Sudden Fear, and others a couple months ago, but it's still in my unwatched stack. It's pretty much a given that I'll be upgrading this Fritz Lang movie, though. Here's to one of the greatest directors.

I ordered Hangmen Also Die from Blowitoutahere last week. I got an email from them three days ago stating that they were unable to locate the disc and that they would keep trying. Of course, that may simply be due to the fact that it was not released yet.

EDIT: I just checked my order number, and the tracking lists it as shipped. I got an email at the exact same moment, though, informing me that the item had been backordered, and that it will ship as soon as it arrives. Strange. I don't mind waiting, though.

I watched this Cohen Media Blu-ray of Hangmen Also Die! this evening, and I really got into it.

Fritz Lang's Hangmen Also Die! has a lot in common with one of my favorite films, Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows (1969). Both movies feature intense scenes involving resistance fighters against Nazi occupation, and both movies feature protagonists who are well aware that their own lives are insignificant in the grand scheme of stopping a force of evil in the world. Although Hangmen Also Die! is an old movie, some of the interrogation scenes still sent chills down my spine.

James Wong Howe's cinematography is stunning, as always, and the look comes across well on this impressive Blu-ray transfer.

Highly recommended!

I previously bought the German DVD because it was uncut and I'm happy to confirm that the Cohen Blu has restored the cut scene.

The Cohen bluray is razor sharp, full of texture, correct in densities, complete and uncut. Highly recommended. Haven't seen the Arrow.
