I really enjoyed the first 6 episodes -- one of the most well-made TV series I've ever had the opportunity to see. Absolutely looked and felt more like an HBO series than a Starz one (which is a good thing for someone like me).

(As an indicator of whether my opinion is worth anything to you personally, my favorite shows would include things like Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, The Tudors, and Kings.)

If you like period dramas or romance shows I would suggest checking out the pilot or giving the show a chance. It's a very well done show and some compare it to Game of Thrones even though it's not anywhere near as violent or has the amount of nudity as GoT has.

Season 1 VOLUME 1?

I REALLY hope this doesn't catch on with other shows. Give us a complete season set, not this volume crap.

Umm, Mad Men? Breaking Bad? Hell, Battlestar Galactica (the DVD Sets, at least). This isn't new.

Too late. Since the dawn of TV on DVD, this has pretty much always been the case for shows with mid-season breaks that last for months and months (and months).

To put it into perspective, the entire first season of Black Sails is 8 episodes -- the entire volume 1 of Outlander is 8 episodes. I think Sony is absolutely doing this right. I bet it'll be $25 most places on release day, which is good considering you're getting 8 episodes of a premium cable show (which in many cases is the equivalent of a full season).

It also makes sense from a promotional standpoint ("get Starz before the second half of the season airs!"), and it's good for fans who don't want to wait for the second half of the season to broadcast and then wait however many more months it'll take (especially when the second half doesn't even begin to premiere until April). They're even making the collector's edition have a stand-in slot for volume 2. This is just fine IMO.

This sounds interesting, but $40.xx for ONLY 8 episodes is kinda crazy!
Though I'm sure the price will drop a bit.
I got Game of Thrones: Season 1 for $25... same amount of episodes, but at nearly half the price! At least that was a complete Season!

In point of fact, the standard Blu-ray set is $32.

And with tax, it still comes out to ~$40.oo
I'd rather have the Set that comes with more Content.

The prices will drop though around when it comes out.

The season 1 volume 1 collectors edition comes with a box that is big enough to house volume 2 of season 1 which is pretty cool. I think $40 is a good price if you think about it this way.

Most movies are $20 and people don't have any problem spending that much on something that is most of the time under 2 hrs. This 8 episode series is about 8 hrs of content for the price of 2 movies that don't even equal 4 hrs. Pretty good if you ask me. Now yes I know you can also get a 22 episode season for less than $40. Just depends on how much you like this show.

I am rather bummed we're not getting any commentaries, though. Would have definitely loved to get some featuring Ronald D. Moore and the cast.

Agreed. RDM's podcasts and commentaries from the BSG days are some of the best (and most informative) special features out there. I've never been much of a commentary guy, because far too often it's a "[x] is so great" fest, but I've listened to ALL of RDM's Galactica commentaries.

And Graham McTavish is hilarious, so it would be cool to throw him on a couple of tracks too. As far as the rest of them, I'm pretty uninterested in hearing what they'd have to say.

I agree as well. The podcasts have been great to listen to after each episode of Outlander so far and have been full of interesting information. If commentaries had been included, they would have be the first I’d have taken the time to listen to (I usually just watch the show/movie and any deleted scenes and call it a day).

I put my order in for the OST and the Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, so now back to waiting for the second half of the season to start. My dad and sister love this show as well, but my mom’s not much for historicals or sci/fi.

CULVER CITY, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2015) - Based on Diana Gabaldon'sinternational best-selling book series, OUTLANDER: SEASON 1, VOLUME 1 will debut on March 3; fans can add the Limited Collector's Edition to their libraries, along with the Blu-ray and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. This New York Times best-selling series that encompassesromance, science fiction, history and adventure has been published in 26 countries and translated into 23 languages, selling more than 26 million copies worldwide. Legions of devoted fans were delighted when Gabaldon agreed to the production of the story she began more than 20 years ago.

OUTLANDER premiered on Starz to rave reviews and record-breaking audience numbers, starring Caitriona Balfe (Super 8) as WWII nurse Claire Randall, who, while on a second honeymoon with her husband, finds herself inexplicably transported back in time to Scotland, circa 1743. Forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous Scottish warrior played by Sam Heughan (A Princess for Christmas), Claire begins an extremely challenging life that places her in two completely different worlds and with two different loves. Praised by critics and fans for the high production value and authentic period detail, Gabaldon's portrayal of her amazingly strong female protagonist truly comes to life in this visually breathtaking series from Sony Pictures Television.

OUTLANDER: SEASON 1,VOLUME 1 contains all eight episodes in two-disc sets loaded with special features for collectors and fans alike. Avid viewers can also follow Claire's epic journey through time with the Limited Collector's Edition, featuring a 32-page book filled with photographs, excerpts from the scripts, and an introduction from author Diana Gabaldon. Also included is a placeholder for Volume 2, allowing fans to complete their Season 1 collection.

The stand-alone Blu-ray and DVD sets for OUTLANDER: SEASON 1, VOLUME 1 will include two all-new featurettes. In the first featurette, "Outlander: An Epic Adaptation," Diana Gabaldon shares the story of writing her first book and her thoughts about executive producer Ronald D. Moore bringing her stories to life. In the second, "Authentic in Design: The Dresses and Kilts of Outlander," producers and costume designers take viewers through the extraordinary wardrobe and share the distinct process of creating 18th-century fashion for the series.

Blu-ray exclusives include 21 deleted scenes and four additional, all-new featurettes. Fans can take an inside look at the casting for the show in "Casting Outlander," and see how the actors immersed themselves in horseback training, Gaelic classes and much more for their roles in "Emerging a Scot: Cast Goes to Boot Camp." Viewers can also learn about the significance of the home to the Clan MacKenzie in "On Location: Castle Leoch and the Magic of Scotland," and take an in-depth walk through of both the set and stages with executive producer Ronald D. Moore.

OUTLANDER also stars Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones), Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot), Graham McTavish (The Hobbit trilogy), Lotte Verbeek (The Borgias), Duncan Lacroix (Vikings), Grant O'Rourke and Stephen Walters. The series was developed by executive producer and Peabody Award Winner Ronald D. Moore (2005, Battlestar Galactica), best known for his contributions to the Star Trek franchise. Outlander is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company, and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Synopsis: Outlander follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse, who, in 1946, is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, and immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that splits Claire's heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
