The Terminator (James Cameron) -- Japanese Dub Collector's Edition

20th Century Fox Japan will release a special edition of James Cameron's The Terminator (1984) in Japan on June 24th, 2015.

While we can expect the same video encode and extras as the 2013 remastered BD, Fox Japan have updated the audio specs, and this may include some semi-valuable material for superfans of the film....lossless mono audio tracks.

Right now, the audio tracks are as follows:

1. English: DTS-HD MA 5.1
2. Japanese: DTS-HD MA 1.0 (TV Asahi dub)
3. Japanese: DTS-HD MA 2.0 (TV Tokyo dub)
4. Japanese: DTS-HD MA 1.0 (VHS dub)
5. Japanese: DTS 5.1 (BD/DVD dub)

The two TV dubs seem to be missing some audio (which will be replaced with original language/subtitles) but it appears the Japanese VHS mono track may be complete.

I assume you're looking at this edition:



Unfortunately, this appears to be the standard disc (in a limited edition red amaray case, with a pamphlet) with the 2015 digital extras. It was originally added by another user, erroneously cloning the specs for the Japanese Dub Complete Edition. If you think about it, this makes perfect sense, because Fox would have sold far less copies of the box set, if the same disc could be purchased from the same release date in a much cheaper edition:

This seems to be the standard practice with other Fox Japanese Dub Complete Editions (where the disc is used only in Japan), too.

So, if you want the edition with the Japanese lossless mono tracks, then it's the box set, or this forthcoming SteelBook.

I received my SteelBook edition today. The disc is specified to be the exact same one as in the Japanese Dub Complete Edition released in June 2015, and the disc art reflects that release.

Confirmation:

This disc is region free.

As expected, the video and English: DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio are bit-for-bit identical to the remastered Fox/MGM BD, right down to the fact that there is still no main menu, and only the user-activated pop-up menu (here in Japanese only) is available. The English subtitles are still SDH, still in white font, and also do appear to be the same, despite a small bit-for-bit difference.

Using info translated from this very detailed listing of Japanese video releases of The Terminator, the Japanese dub tracks appear to be as follows:

2. TV Asahi (Broadcast: September 8th, 1991): DTS-HD MA 1.0
3. TV Tokyo (Broadcast: May 29th, 2003): DTS-HD MA 2.0
4. VHS: DTS-HD MA 1.0
5. 2001 SE DVD: DTS 5.1

I ended up choosing to watch the entire film with the Japanese VHS dub track, as the other tracks are either incomplete, or use the remixed sound.

From spot-checking, the two TV dubs (which are both incomplete, running 99 and 98 minutes, respectively) seem to be less impressive in overall sound quality, and the DTS-HD MA 2.0 dub uses the remixed sound. The DTS 5.1 dub, which seems to have been created for the Japanese SE DVD back in 2001, and then used on subsequent DVDs and the remastered BD, is the least impressive by far, as it not only features the remix, but also sounds horribly compressed, too.

On the other hand, the Japanese: DTS-HD MA 1.0 VHS dub track sounds shockingly great, especially for a vintage dubbed audio track (the elements must have been remastered for this Blu-ray), and while its post-synced Japanese dialogue sometimes interferes, the music, and particularly, the effects, sound correct and terrific. While it's not clear to me exactly when the Japanese VHS dub was recorded, it does appear to match the original English: Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono track on my 2001 US SE DVD.

Hopefully, one day, we will get a BD of the film with the lossless original mono audio, and all of the previous video extras. But in the meantime, this lossless mono Japanese dub makes for a decent stand-in, marrying the original audio mix to the remastered picture, while maintaining full Blu-ray quality. I think that hardcore fans of the film may actually want to consider a purchase of this BD, in either edition, just to get this track.

As much as I love the mono mix and indeed the film itself (best Cameron flick EVAH) I'm not gonna watch it with Japanese dubbing just to get the original everything else.
