I don't think they want you spraying compressed air in the vents.

I'd use a microfiber towel or a "swiffer" that will attract the dust.

It's not a liquid, but compressed air, that can come out very cold.

I had heard numerous times in this forum that compressed air is fine for cleaning the PS3. Is this wrong?

No it is fine, but do not turn them upside down when spraying, do not spray them for too long, and do not spray to close. If you give it some distance (5 inches or so) you should be fine.
But use a cloth on the rest, and a weak vacuum on the grills FIRST.

I just keep my system covered with a towel when its not in use. After I play it a couple hours I get a soft cloth wipe it off then cover it back up with the towel. It stays clean that way.
