Default The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook)

Park Chan-wook's highly acclaimed film "The Handmaiden" will be available in Bluray on Oct 27.

Just pre-ordered from DDDHouse (http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_d...roductID=15772).

Looking forward to seeing this film...almost every film critic who has seen it seems to love it..stands at 82% in Metacritic).

Reading that synopsis it sounds similar in some ways to Ang Lee's Lust, Caution (2007)

Oh. They're after money though. It's not politically motivated.

The running time in the description is 140 minutes which corresponds with the cut version (aka explicit sex scenes cut).

I really want to buy this but I noticed there was also an extended version screened so hopefully there is a release that includes the original and the extended versions somewhere down the line.

Just read up on it since I saw your post and seems like it might indeed be worth holding out:

Quote:
AE: Is that extended version the version we saw at TIFF?

PC: No, it’s not. It’s something you might be able to see on a Blu-ray. That’s why I have people come up to me and say, “Well compared to the release version director Park, the release version was more of a thriller. The extended version seems like a romance.” When I hear people who have seen the extended version say that, I feel it’s a bit of an exaggeration when you say that. But it is true that there is more romantic elements certainly in the extended version.
He goes more in-depth regarding the two cuts in the full article: http://www.afterellen.com/movies/511...nded-version/2

Also, question regarding the Korean release. Which publisher will be handling it? CJ?

Are there 140 minute and 144 minute versions? The U.S. release appears to run 144 mins.

The 144 minute version is the original theatrical version length. The 140 minute one falls in line with the length of the cut version. It was released cut in Singapore with a run time of 140 minutes so I think that's the de facto length for all cut versions. And there was also a 167 minute extended version released in South Korea but I don't know if it's been screened anywhere else.

Thanks for the information. I guess it might be better to hold off until the full theatrical version is released at least. Hopefully a Korean Blu-ray will be announced soon.

Well....I was really excited there for about 30 seconds. Basically until I read it was the censored version.

Would've definitely bought the Blu-ray if that wasn't the case. This movie will only play in Landmark Theaters in my area and they're not exactly conveniently located. Guess I'll have to wait for a proper Blu-ray release.

This is just a theory but it may possibly be original theatrical version and the listing is just incorrect. I did a quick search for when the movie was in theaters in Hong Kong and I found a run time shown of 145 minutes. I included the link here:

http://www.cinema.com.hk/en/movie/details/8974

So at this point, who the hell knows really. It does seem odd to release it uncut in theaters and then cut on blu-ray. I guess we'll just have to wait until it's released and there is more information available on it.

There's a copy on eBay with a picture of the back cover. It says 140 mins. Could it be a mistake?

The Hong Kong Bluray has a frame rate of 25 fps so there is a PAL like speed up which might explain the shorter riunning time

Good catch! I just tried using a PAL to NTSC timecode converter and it came out to being 145 minutes. So I guess that means it's uncut then?

I saw that one today at a theater in LA, and it certainly seemed very explicit (and also a great film all-around).

Another thing to watch for is color-coded subtitles. I don't know about other releases, but the US theatrical release had Korean translated into white subtitles and Japanese translated into yellow, which is helpful because characters sometimes change language in the middle of a conversation.
