Default Do You Think - That there is any one movie everyone enjoys?

I can't even come up with one solid title - I try to go old school, people might find it boring. New stuff is hard as it is, some people like dialogue-driven plots, others like non-stop action. I think my best bet might be a Disney Movie...

...Lion King? Who hates Lion King? I mean...come on!

I would rather be roasted alive than forced to watch Lion King.

So I can agree with your original premise, that there is no movie everyone can like.

Im gonna agree that Lion King would be a solid title but I think that Titanic would be right up there as far as a HUGE purchase.

and even though I wouldnt buy it, Star Wars would be big

Titanic would have its digressors - some couldn't watch it.

Star Wars is seriously divisive. Its a hate it or love it thing.

And as for 2nd poster - you don't say! What do you find fault in it? James Earl Jones' inaccurate portrayal of a grown male lion?

I find most people liked Lord of the Rings.. but no matter what film you list, I have met or know people who did not like it.

There are a number of people that either didn't get or just don't like LotR, a lot think Lion King is hacked or ripped from Hamlet, some of my friends don't understand why guys like Gladiator...
etc...

SO .... no. I do not think there is one film EVERYONE will like. However there are films that MOST people will like.

My wife hates Lion King.

I can watch is with my kids but I can see where she's coming from ... the soundtrack is pretty hate-able.

I'm sure there will always be a handful of people who disagree with ANY movie mentioned, but these three come to mind:

"E.T."
"Singing in the Rain"
"The Wizard of Oz"

There is no such thing as one "greatest film ever made". It is purely subjective and conditional. A film that is great for some reasons is not for others, (pure entertainment vs. art; dramatic structure, character development & dialog vs. action suspense...etc...even B & W vs color, sound vs. silent)

De gustibus non est disputandum.

No disputes regarding tastes indeed - film is really very objective.

It also depends on what part of the world you live in. In Russia a lot of people think Stalker (Tarkovsky) is the greatest film ever made.

If I had to throw one movie into the ring, I would say Pirates of the Carribean 1. Everyone seemed to think that was the best of the trilogy and it's a good family movie.

ET might come as close as you will.

I didn't like Gladiator.

My parents can't stand any of the Lord of the Rings movies, nor the Pirates of the Carribean movies.

My mother even dislikes the Wizard of Oz, but that's because she used to babysit for kids who wanted to watch nothing but. You'd dislike a movie you were forced to watch 200 times in a year too. At least I know I would.

I don't think it is possible for there to be a film that 100% of people like. I'll take the PEPSI challenge

And, as you and I have discussed on other threads, those who are Purists would think that Peter Jackson's movie a blasphemy. I do like LOTR, but only because it is as close to the book as we have for now.

The answer to the first question is simple...there is no one ANYTHING on this planet that EVERYONE will say that they enjoy. There are just too many opinions/beliefs out there and too many likes/dislikes. And IMO, it would be a dull world without ALL those opinions.

Agreed.

It would be dull if everyone liked the same things. It's good to see other points of view.
There are never going to be movies like everyone will like. But like Lord of the Rings, MOST people will like some films.
Yes, purists do not like (or at least some of them don't) the LotR films. My sister is a purist to some degree, and even though she knows just about everything they changed, omitted, did wrong; she still likes the films too.
