You think DM3 is gonna open below even DM1 when DM2 did 83.5/368m?

Franchise fatigue. And besides Boss Baby, animated films this year haven't performed as well as expected.

Minions did 115.7/336m after DM2, so I don't think franchise fatigue will affect this one by that much. 55m is a rather precipitous drop from the previous ones.

True, and even Boss Baby wasn't supposed to do that well to begin with. What other animated films have there been this year besides it and Cars 3?

DM3 will do solid business, but Minion-fever has already spiked, and there's been a glut of animated flicks that have underperformed this year.

And, sadly, Baby Driver will probably get lost in the shuffle, just like Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Despicable Me 3 will get over $100 mil. Even if some of the kids are growing out of them there are a fresh new group of kids who will find them Minions adorable and wanna see them. Plus look what's opening against it? The House and Baby Driver will both be lucky to reach $20-$25 mil and I don't see either making $100mil domestically. Transformers will be blah after being out for 10+ days so DM3 will have the weekend all to itself

I am really excited for Baby Driver. I feel like it's going to have a slower start but really good staying power. Hoping for it to be strong out of the gate though.

I'll check out all of the openers.

1. Despicable Me 3 $95 million
2. The House $25 million
3. Transformers 5 $20 million
4. Baby Driver $14 million (would love to see it surpass that)
5. Cars 3 $12 million

Wonder Woman could take 4 or 5 depending on how well it holds this weekend.

Yeah, kids still love the Minions, and the Happy Meals start rolling out next week. I say a minimum of $80 million, but it will probably be in the $90 - $100 range.

D3 should be able to pull down around $100M. Hopefully, Baby Driver will have breakout numbers.

The House looks bland. What a terrible year for mainstream comedy.

Hoping Baby Driver breaks out and scoops into second place, I'm doubtful but it's possible. Sony were mad to put it in such a loaded weekend.

Showing signs of rust, Paramount and director Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight is doing tepid business at the North American box office.

The big-budget summer tentpole, opening Wednesday and directed by Bay, is headed for a five-day domestic debut of $64 million-$65 million, well behind any of the previous four installments in the toy-turned-film franchise.

That will include a Friday-Sunday take of roughly $40.5 million, a dismal showing considering box-office blockbuster Wonder Woman is projected to earn $26 million all the way in its fourth weekend. On Friday, Warner Bros. and helmer Patty Jenkins' superhero film became the top-grossing live-action directed by a woman with more than $615 million in worldwide ticket sales (Mamma Mia! was the previous record holder with $609.8 million). Wonder Woman also jumped the $300 million mark domestically on Friday.

The Last Knight is wielding a far sharper sword overseas, where it has earned $85 million in its first several days, including an opening day tally of $47.9 million in China, the third best gross ever for a foreign film behind the last two Fast and Furious films.
