Default itunes HD free upgrade to 4k , does Vudu gives 4k too?

Hi all,

1) For itunes HD free upgrade to 4k , and now with Movies Anywhere , does Vudu gives 4k on these movies too?

Example , The revenant , Logan , Lucy , Jason Bourne all are redeemed in iTunes and given free 4k upgrade in iTunes. Will Vudu give UHD on these same
titles ?

2) In Vudu, How to check if i own UHD version of the movie? The app and website are both confusing to me.

iTunes doesn't necessarily give free 4K upgrades (edit: I mean for MA ports). It seems to be more of a glitch that only works with some movies. The only reason it happens is because iTunes upgrades some purchased movies from HD to 4K automatically, so it appears to iTunes that you've "purchased" all your MA movies.

No, it is an announced feature. But it needs to either be an HD purchase you paid for, or an HD code redeemed directly on ITunes, XML code redemptions or imports from Movies Anywhere will not give the 4K upgrade.

That's exactly what I said. Apple rolled out a program where HD movies purchased through iTunes would be upgraded to 4K. Some people are seeing cases where movies ported TO iTunes through MA have been pushed through the same automatic upgrade to 4K. However, it is not the norm.

If a title is purchased/redeemed at a Movies Anywhere provider in 4K UHD then it loads 4K UHD rights in MA.

I bought The Lego Ninjago Movie UHD from Vudu and it is 4K Dolby Vision in iTunes. When Google and Amazon get this, it will update those services.

I bought Flatliners '17 in 4K from Google Play and it is 4K Dolby Vision in iTunes and UHD in Amazon. When Vudu gets it, it will be updated.

I redeemed Atomic Blonde in iTunes and it is 4K Dolby Vision and is 4K HDR/DV in Vudu.

So long as MA provides 4K UHD rights, you'll get 4K in iTunes from non-iTunes redemptions.

Alternatively, direct purchases in iTunes of Warner, Sony, Paramount, Fox, Lionsgate, MGM include 4K upgrades when available regardless of purchase date.

I just tested it by redeeming an iTunes HD code. It redeemed on iTunes as HD (not 4K), and ported to MA and Vudu as HD. The code was Logan, if that helps.

Do you have ATV to verify? If you redeemed on foxredeem.com and selected iTunes pretty sure it should be 4K there.

Logan is Fox and Fox doesn't have UHD available at Vudu.

iTunes on the PC/Mac will show HD, Apple TV 3 will show 1080p.

You need to confirm on ATV 4 or higher or iOS device through the TV app. It will show as 4K there.

That's what I did, foxredeem.com --> iTunes. It's just HD - no 4K. I've checked on every platform, it's 1080p in every case. iPhone through TV app, iPad through TV app, Macbook through iTunes. All with the latest updates too.

I'm aware that Vudu doesn't do 4K for Fox, but I haven't gotten 4K upgrades for any of the iTunes movies I've redeemed recently.

I actually searched for it... but here it is in my "library:"

And here is Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow:

which was imported through Movies Anywhere. I can watch it in 1080p/HDR on my iPhone 8 Plus.

I am also seeing some inconsistencies and wish we got a definitive answer on existing HD titles and MA.

If purchased or redeemed HD via iTunes and the movie later becomes available in 4K, it will be upgraded to 4K within iTunes, however, the title doesn't always flow to MA reflecting 4K status. Example redeemed Despicable Me 2 over a year ago and the title was only HD, however, upon the recent 4K upgrade the title was updated in MA as UHD (and flowed to VUDU as UHD) yet E.T. (iTunes redemption) and Jupiter Ascending (iTunes purchase) haven't been updated to UHD in MA.

I emailed Apple but they said these titles aren't available in 4K

There won't be a definitive answer, just have to roll with it. I'm not joking or being rude. I called to have my titles fixed via MA support was told to talk to Vudu and iTunes.

iTunes does not push the new UHD entitlement to MA when a movie at iTunes becomes available in 4K. This is something iTunes needs to resolve for their customers. It makes no sense that if you buy Jupiter Ascending now it should go to MA as a UHD purchase but if you did it last year it won't. People who used iTunes before the free 4K upgrade was available should be supported as well as those who came after.

There's an issue with MA and iTunes/TV app. You can't go off of what the iTunes store or the TV App say. Because buying HD is not an option if the movie is available in 4K, iTunes will say you own the movie in 4K, which may or may not be correct. The same with the TV app on the iPhone and Apple TV. It may say you have the movie in 4K because for 4K is available, but that may not be what you really have. To see if you have access to the 4K version of a movie, play the movie on Apple TV, then swipe down. You'll be able to see if it's playing in 4K or HD. For example, I have X-Men First Class in my iTunes library through Movies Anywhere. On the TV App on both the Apple TV and iPhone, it shows that I have it in 4k, but when it actually plays, it only plays in HD. On the other hand, movies that were natively redeemed through iTunes are upgrading just fine to 4k as it's becomes available.

I think the issue comes from that Vudu shows a distinction between HD and UHD, so if a release is redeemed through Vudu and it's UHD, that'll transfer over to iTunes as 4k. If Vudu one day follows Apple's lead and combines HD and 4k, it may resolve this issue.

I can share screenshots when I get home if anyone is interested.
