Default THE BRIDE (Franc Roddam, 1985) -- from Scream Factory 9/25/18

The Bride Blu-ray

Franc Roddam's THE BRIDE (1985) comes to Blu this September form Scream Factory:

Quote:
**NEW TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT**

Here comes THE BRIDE! The 1985 lavish remake of The Bride of Frankenstein is coming to the Blu-ray for the first time on September 25th.

"The photography is just right, the editing flawless, the set design convincing and the wardrobes spot on ... The brilliant screenplay makes [the] journey fun, heart-warming and sad." – Tales Of Terror

Frankenstein builds the perfect woman — and lives to regret it — in this tantalizing marriage of horror, romance, and unbridled passion! Rock legend Sting plays the cunning scientist and Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) lends her dramatic presence as his supreme, sublime creation. This gothic tale, inspired by the indelible themes and characters originally brought to life by Mary Shelley, follows Frankenstein's creations as they search for their place in the world — the gorgeous Eva by declaring her independence, and her grotesque intended mate Viktor (Clancy Brown, Highlander) by learning self-worth from a compassionate circus dwarf (David Rappaport, Time Bandits). Can Dr. Frankenstein survive when the monster returns to claim his intended?

Extras are in progress and will be announced on a later date. Pre-order THE BRIDE now directly from us for two weeks early shipping @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...roduct_id=6835

I've never seen it, but I recall from the eighties that this was pretty much panned, that it was terrible. Genre fans - is that an accurate assessment?

Not at all, imo. It was a very lavish production, with some great sets and lighting, from what I recall from the last time I saw it many years ago on DVD. Sting fit the role well, and I especially enjoyed the side adventure with Frankenstein's monster.
[Show spoiler] I found the friendship he made with his companion especially touching.

Don't pay so much attention to what stuffy critics say.

It is VERY much of it's time. I'm a big fan of many Frankenstein iterations- Bride Of Frankenstein is my favorite movie tied with Jaws and Bride Of Frankenstein this ain't. But everybody in it is serviceable. It was kind of Sting's bid for the movie-star big-time if I remember right and he's... fine. It just doesn't do anything you haven't seen before and commits the cardinal sin of being kind of boring. I've seen it a couple of times and each time I remember that I've forgotten almost all of it.

What stood out to me about it (aside from a nude Jennifer Beals) was the tender story about the relationship between the monster and the small person.

Absolutely. One of the best things about the film imo. It's a touching story.

Jennifer was not nude, it was her double, Fenella Fielding!

I remember at the time critics said the Sting / Beals stuff was dreadful, the other half with the monster and his buddy was regarded as outstanding.. I really like the film, but understand that point of view...

I remember this on HBO when it premiered when i was a kid, a decent movie but nowhere near Bride of Frankenstein.

Maybe Scream might announce another better title this week.

They used to show this on WPIX 11 in NY all the time in the late '80s. I'm a HUGE Universal Monsters fan and I do remember watching this a few times as a kid. Sting is no Colin Clive - not even close - and Jennifer Beals isn't Elsa Lanchester, of course, but I do remember the side story featuring the Frankenstein monster (Clancy Brown) and friend (David Rappaport) was pretty nice. I may pick this one up during a sale for that nostalgia alone.

P.S. I do also recall that at 120 minutes long, the film did outstay its welcome.

Scream offers this while Kino offers Deep Rising. Something is definitely wrong here.

I turned my nose up at this when it was originally released in the mid eighties.

Ended up getting it on DVD though because at that point in the format I seemed to be buying everything. When I finally watched it, I was surprised to find I actually enjoyed it.

It doesn't come close to the Whale original, but taken on it's own it's a highly decent, thoughtful, and entertaining take on the material.

Will buy it as soon as I can score a decent deal on it- and with these Shout releases, that's not that easy.

Now if we could just get "Brimstone and Treacle" on bluray then any itch to watch Sting in something not too terrible can be scratched.
