Has anybody seen this? It's billed as the Czech Republic's first full-length 3d film
(2011) and is compared to a Terry Gilliam work in this article...https://news.expats.cz/film-cinema/v-perine/ Here's the sales link from film arena https://www.filmarena.cz/blu-ray-v-perine-3d and the same director as Carmen https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=302043 Last edited by robtadrian; 06-11-2018 at 08:47 AM. |

yes, the native 3D is quite good, and it doesn't shy away from pop-outs. Although for some of the CG fantasy environments it could be a bit ropey. The stereoscopy seemed slightly off at times in terms of mixing live action with animation, elements on the wrong levels, that sort of thing.
It's a musical; the songs felt a bit like forgotten 90s eurovision entries. Lightweight. There was a lot of originality with the fantasy aspect, and some memorable imagery and it's well produced overall. I'm not sure what it was all about though. |

This is subtitled, correct? Do the subtitles constantly clash with the 3D/pop-outs? I don't mind subtitles on flat films but in 3D they often ruin the 3D experience by cutting through objects, unless the subtitles use depth to raise them in front of the action.

well, it's a musical so I wasn't paying all that much attention to the subtitles, just enough to get the gist of it. When lyrics are translated they lose all the rhyme and rhythm of the original language, so it was enough to just get an idea of what the song was about.
Although to be honest there were instances where the subtitles conflicted with the visuals. If it became difficult to read, I either ignored it, or covered one eye to read. I always find it best not to focus on areas of stereo conflict, and instead find focal points that can be more comfortably resolved. I don't think it was the most dialogue-heavy film, but the subs had a lot of awkwardly translated lyrics. |

I forgot about that. I have seen some films with forced subtitles and it's very annoying. My old Panasonic blu-ray player used to let me shift forced subtitles off the screen so they weren't visible. The newer Panasonic player I have doesn't let me do that.

- why are subtitles ever forced... seriously. What is the logic.
On this disc, they're not forced, and there's a choice between English and Czech. |

I can confirm that the disc is region free.
I took another look at it, the native 3-D is definitely strong for the most part, and particularly effective at times. There are numerous scenes with feather snowstorms, the setups tend to be deep and well layered, and as anyone who's ever visited the Czech Republic will know, it's a most beautiful country. Some of the different music numbers show idyllic settings around the town, and there are some crowd scenes that are great in 3-D, as well as various bits of business clearly designed to showcase the third dimension. I mentioned technical issues with the fantasy sequences, set inside a duvet dream world. Several characters get sucked inside their duvets right from the start and at later points in the film. Live-action characters don't make proper contact with the virtual environments, and occasionally background elements appear closer than the actors in front of them. I think it's possible to overlook these issues, and I don't find any of this leads to eye strain (but others may be more sensitive). The movie feels like it's set in some non-specific nostalgia past. You will not see any modern vehicles, and there are various old-fashioned looking background characters. Somewhere between the 1950s and 1980s it would seem. Obviously this is the utopia that was life behind the iron curtain! Unlikely. Trying to place the time period is the sort of thing that kept me engaged inbetween all the stereoscopic eye-candy. I noticed a lot of old radios, but I don't remember a single tv in this world. Just a few observations, not criticism. This quirky, period quality reminded me of some of the work of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, but this is more of a simplistic fantasy. Although it can be clever with the material, and it does have a few inspired moments. There are things about it that did, and didn't work for me. There may have been some cultural references I missed, and translation is far from perfect but I felt I understood most of what was going on. |
