Hi guys, I am new and blu. I recently bought a PS3 60gig, Samsung LCD 40 inch 70s series, have now 26 blu ray movies, 4 in order (love amazon bogos), and have a Sony STRDE-575 receiver. No money to upgrade that now. Here is my problem: I moved my home theatre to another room, hooked up the PS3 throught the optical cable, everything works except my center speaker. I have checked the actual center speaker and it is ok, checked the wire and re stripped the tips of the speaker cable. I turn off the receiver for a couple of hours, turn on the receiver and do a test tone and i get sound from all the speakers. As soon as i play a blu ray movie, i get complete sound from all the speakers for about 2 minutes. Then i get no sound from the center speaker, all of the other speakers sound great. I have been frustrated for the last 4 days, unable to watch movies, even called Sony. Please help!!!

Hey there! I'm not sure if this is the same problem that I had - I had a Yamaha receiver and pretty much experienced the same symptoms: the center would work for a little bit and then dead. It turns out that one of the capacitors in the receiver failed. Sad thing is that it was quite new too, didn't really log a lot of mileage on the thing too. Hopefully your issue is not as bad.

Does the center channel work with other sources (ie. a DVD player, cable box, etc.)?
Now, there may be a PS3 setting issue at work here. Is your receiver on a direct input mode, where it just outputs sound to the speakers for which it has a signal, or do you have the receiver set to do any special processing (ie. enhancements)? I bring this up because if so, the front stereo speaker signals may also be getting sent to the back, if you have a sound enhancement. This then ties in to my following paragraph. What I am thinking here is that you may either be selecting the PCM sound on a blu-ray (and anything above 2.0 PCM can only be passed via HDMI) and therefore only getting those channels, or in the sound output setup of the PS3 you may have only selected 2.0 output formats. If one of these turns out to be true, and you have a sound enhancement running on your receiver, then the rear speakers are probably giving you just a version of the front stereo signals. One other thing, have you tried the PS3 with a just a DVD? If so, what resulted from that? Any other info you can provide will be helpful, too. Last edited by nhaase; 01-10-2008 at 01:25 PM. |

If there was a problem with the Sony Receiver it would go into "protect" (common result with wiring mistakes)which suggests to me that you have set up problem with output of your Ps3,or you have a sound setting wrong on the receiver try AFD( auto format decode)

When you moved your home theater - and reconnected your PS3, did you set-up the optical out again through the PS3 menu? Did you verify the settings were all still good?
Make sure they you checked of the correct sound options (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.) |

Wow , thanks guys for all these suggestions. I checked last nite Star Wars Episode 3 dvd, and same thing all the sound, no dialogue, no center speaker. I have a hdmi cable running from the ps3 to the tv. Optical cable from ps3 to receiver. I do have the AFD button on. I think we might be up to something regarding the PS3 set up function. I go to sound settings picked digital cable for sound i click on dolby and dts , but how do i get rid of the other pcm options? I don't add anything else but i cant get rid of these two linear pcm 2 ch.44.1 and Ch 48 khz. Should these two be left on? Worst case scenario if it is a capacitor problem should i just hold on , and wait until i get another receiver? Any suggestion are more than welcome, thanks guys!!!

blame, how about trying to run test tones for 20 minutes or so? it sounds like wiring is fine given that everything is coming out of the correct channels. when watching a movie, u do get sound out of the center. so, it sounds like you are fine there. i'd be more inclined to believe that there is an issue with the receiver itself. thus, try running a test tone for 20 mins (try turning volume down so you don't have to hear). if it still works, leave it going with the volume up. the other thing i can think of is that if ur turning the volume up, you may have too long of a connecter on your wires that only shorts at high power outputs. however, that should shut the whole system down... not just the center.

The strde-575 is an older non es piece iirc...so it happens...more than likely capacitor failure i had an old Sony and a topline Onkyo receiver do this...both were used heavily. Various boards & capacitors had failed on both to cause the intermittent center channel dropout. |

I'm pretty it's not the PS3 for the simple fact that you'd probably end up losing all chanels unless the PS3 itself was doing the decoding. Plus it wouldn't take like 2 minutes to go away. I'd assume it's the reciever. I had the EXACT same problem with an Aiwa reciever and a Technics one. It blows, but an upgrade is probably the only solution.
