Arrow AMC Theatres On Demand

AMC Theatres have launched their own On Demand streaming service:

AMC Theatres On Demand

- Digital movies available to rent or buy

- Earn AMC Stubs rewards points (which means you have to be a member, but they have a free tier)

- Can watch on Windows or Mac computers, Android or iOS devices, LG Smart TVs, and Roku

Some immediate drawbacks for me: No mention of Movies Anywhere compatibility, or Amazon Fire playability. Of course, these could change in the future.

Why jump into an already crowded marketplace?

The only appeal would be if your movie ticket also gave you access to view it on digital

Clearly they are trying to future-proof their business. And if this includes Stubs reward points, some might find it more appealing.

Studios may also want to consider cross-promotions that encourage people to watch both in theaters and later on at home.

Since AMC is a very large theater chain they could easily beat out Vudu or Apple in some cross promotion, sort of like Regal has tried. See this movie, get a free digital title. Buy x digital movies and get a free movie ticket. Etc.

If it linked to MA, I'd be in for it! Getting digital copies of anything we see in theaters would be nice, but won't keep my hopes up for that! Gotten plenty of benefit out of my A+ membership, so anything else they want to offer, I will keep an eye on.

This is now up and running. Downloaded it to my Roku this morning. They have an introductory offer where you can get 3 movies for buying or renting one of the movies on the below link. Didn't do it myself, so no idea on streaming quality, etc. The FAQ confirms that AMC is not part of Movies Anywhere.

Here are the movies that you pick 3 from. Nothing too exciting, though I had never heard of Carriers, and it's only D2D through DVD.

You have the option to choose 3 of the following movies on us:

American Ultra
Carriers
Crocodile Dundee
Draft Day
Ghost
Mortdecai
Paranormal Activity
Paranormal Activity 4
Rango
Shaun the Sheep Movie

The Age of Adaline
The Duff
The Italian Job

I tried it and the audio and video was pretty good. The sound on my $3.99 rented movie (Leap) was Dolby digital surround according to my amp. The picture looked good watching on my LG C9 with the AMC app. I didn't check the exact resolution.
The reason I rented a movie (which I had 30 days to watch and 48 hours to finish once I started) was to get the 3 free ones. I picked Ghost, Crocodile Dundee, and The Age of Adaline. I haven't seen that last one.
The rental also gave me points towards my next AMC reward.
There are so many choices that I will probably only use it again if they have exclusive access to a film or their price is better.
I hope they stay around long enough that I don't lose my 3 owned films.
