With Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve pulled off a cinematic miracle – delivering a long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece that somehow lived up to the legacy of the original. Since then, he’s been hard at work on his upcoming adaptation of Dune – but that hasn’t stopped the neon-lit future of Blade Runner from percolating in his head.

Speaking to Empire in the 100 Greatest Movies Of The Century issue (Blade Runner 2049 came in at number 45 on the list), Villeneuve looked back at his experience working on the film – and hinted that he might not be done with that universe yet. “It’s such an inspiring place, the Blade Runner world,” he says – adding that he would be interested in another movie if it was ‘unconnected’ from the first two. “The problem is have is the word ‘sequel’. I think cinema needs original stories. But if you ask me if I’d like to revisit this universe in a different way, I can say yes. It would need to be a project on its own. Something disconnected from both other movies. A detective noir story set in the future… I wake up sometimes in the night dreaming about it.” Source

I think the focus right now is the upcoming Black Lotus anime series, after that I think we'll have to wait on how Alcon wants to continue the franchise.

I mean, the original's budget adjusted for inflation cost about $75 million to make. So if they lower the budget to around that point it can still work.

I'll believe it when I see it. Given the box office performance of 2049, I reckon it'll be a long time - if ever - before we see another film. Alcon are busy utilising their licence in other, safer ways (comics, the upcoming anime, etc)

I'd love to see another one, as long as they get another good script but I'd be very surprised if it actually happens. 2049 was a pretty big flop at the box office.

Denis Villeneuve has expressed his interest in returning to the Blade Runner universe for another movie, though he says it would have to be "unconnected" from the original Blade Runner, released in 1982, and his 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
In an interview with Empire, Villeneuve reflected on his ambitious sci-fi sequel, set thirty years after the events of the Ridley Scott's groundbreaking film, as he admitted that the movie's neon-soaked world stimulated more than one story in his mind.

Despite its popularity with critics, Blade Runner 2049 underperformed at the box office, opening to a less-than-expected $32m against a reported $150m production budget. The primary reasons cited for its shortcomings surrounded expense, length (limiting how many times a day theaters can show it), its "R" rating, and that it skewed too old (meaning it didn't appeal enough to younger viewers who were detached from the original).


Even though it was considered a box office flop, Villeneuve's sequel generally earned critical acclaim and high grades from fans. In our own review, we praised 2049 for playing off the "themes, plot, and characters of the 1982 movie" in a way that "organically expands and grows what came before."

In addition to Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve has helmed such Oscar-nominated films as Sicario and Arrival, earning a Best Director Academy nomination for the latter. He is currently working on his adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi novel Dune while at the same time developing a biopic of Cleopatra.

This is absolutely doable, especially since it would have no connection to the first two and therefore doesn't need to be marketed as such. A low budget original story set in the same world. The box office take of 2049 need not apply. Look at Split. I wonder how much less/more money that film would have made if it had been marketed as a sequel to Unbreakable from the off?

I would like both but I would prefer that direct sequel too.

More of the Blade Runner world is something though I’ve wanted for years.

I dunno. I liked 2049 a lot but feel it ends the story with that terrific final scene. What are they gonna do? Just fabricate another situation and have a go at it again? I think it would feel repetitive. Like to see Denis work on something else. Like what’s up with Dune?
