Default The Legend is Born: Ip Man (2010) - December 13, 2011

This is the only Ip Man film I haven’t seen just yet, excluding Ip Man 4. Does this one have any relation to the Donnie Yen films or is it another unrelated film that’s also just based on the same historical figure?

I don’t think Ip Man: The Final Fight is connected to the Donnie Yen films either?

No other Ip Man movies are connected to the four Donnie Yen-starring movies. Others like The Grandmaster, Legend is Born, Ip Man: The Final Fight, the TV series, etc, all are separate.

Despite being a real life figure, Ip Man has (for better or worse) become something of a franchise in and of himself. Hence so many parties trying to create something based on him.

As for this movie, I bought and it watched it many years back (probably back when it was quite new). I remember it being solid, though not overall on the level of the first couple of Donnie Yen Ip Man movies.

Try The Grandmaster. That one felt more artistic and unique from the others.

I guess the confusion comes from the fact that this one can easily pass as a prequel that shows Ip Man in his teen years while The Final Fight can pass as a sequel showing him in his elderly life.

The only films in the Donnie Yen Ip Man canon are Ip Man 1-4 & Master Z.

Maybe we just need a Crisis on Infinite Earths to bring all Ip Man universes into one.

This. Not sure if the Master Z 2 movie is still going to happen or not. Or hey, maybe Ip Man 5 will be a thing.
