Default Receiver Buying Guide

There are so many different receivers out there with so many different options, I was hoping to get some input on when buying a new receiver what it has to have.

what it "has to have" is dependent upon what other devices (tv,bluray, dvd player...) you have or intend to get, as well as your budget you are looking to spend.

As far as getting the best possible audio/video from the receiver to a 1080p TV & Surround sound system from a Blu-Ray player.

My budget is $500.

For example, there are alot of different types of "Surrounds" that receivers offer. I'd hate to buy a receiver and find out it's not giving me what I need.

The Onkyo TX-SR605, TX-SR705, or TX-SR805 are all equipped with all the latest decoders including DTS-HD Master and Dolby TruHD. Check out ecost.com or dakmart.com for good deals

Right now I have a home theatre in a box. It's by JVC, its a pretty decent setup, but not for blu-ray. So yes I definately need speakers as well. Budget: $500.

Onkyo HT-SP908 ($760 +free shipping)

Its an Onkyo 605 with speakers included.

Probably the cheapest combination you will get for a receiver with these capabilities.

if you can save up a little more, this would be worth the money.

I'll be looking to send uncompressed PCM and Dolby True HD from my PS3 for let's say - a 5.1 setup. Keeping the budget under 500 again, and budget under 300... and budget under 200 (if it's possible) what would you suggest?

Thanks.

Doc

The PS3 will not bitstream TrueHD...

So in your case, any multichannel PCM receiver is fine.

Sony Str-DG810 5.1PCM ($305 +free shipping)

Sony Str-DG910 7.1PCM ($425 +free shipping)

Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1PCM HDMI v1.3 ($400 +free shipping)

these are for starters...the Onkyo is probably the best as far as features for the price.

crackinhedz, just a suggestion but since I see you referring people to buying receivers all the time why not create some sort of a spreadsheet with price points and features and post it up? Could make it easier for everyone to look up information on what to buy. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work. ^^v

negative ghostrider.

its a hardware issue that could be possible for newer units (big maybe), but older 20gb and 60gb will never have bitstream.

All PS3's (USA at least) can internally decode Dolby TrueHD. they however cannot bitstream TrueHD...and if you say they can or will, please provide a link to the source?

Do you know if there is a similar package for the Onkyo 705? Is there that much difference between the 2?

Default Onkyo TXSR805

Narrowed down to the TXSR805 for my new reciever. Cheapest I can find is 713. with no tax and free shipping from an authorized dealer. (new not refurb). Anyone seen this for less lately? Refurb is ok if the price diff is enough and there is a warranty.
