Joel Schumacher dies RIP

Joel Schumacher, the writer-director who came from a world of window dressing and costume design to bring a singular style to films including St. Elmo's Fire, Flatliners and a pair of Batman movies, died Monday. He was 80.

Schumacher died after a yearlong battle with cancer, a representative announced.

RIP. Sucks that he battled with cancer for that long, but at least now he’s at peace.

Say what you will about his Batman films, but they were goofy and zany enough to provide an escape from reality.

For me personally, Phone Booth remains a criminally underrated film. Falling Down is another one I really enjoy with Michael Douglas.

This is actually quite upsetting to me. He never made a film I didn't enjoy in some way or another(well, Number 23 was meh). He made some greats, and some guilty pleasures... but above all he dedicated his craft to entertaining cinema goers. He'll be missed.

I feel really sad after hearing this news. I really enjoyed his Batman movies from when I was growing up as a kid. I still love seeing them to this day. I used to have Batman Forever on a recorded VHS at home when I was only a little boy. I loved the experience every time when I had it to watch on TV at home. I also rented out a copy of the movie in a video store, before I recorded the movie off a TV channel, along with Batman & Robin before I actually knew how bad B&R turned out in the Box Office. I think it's a blessing to have me owning them on DVD. It just makes me feel great.

I also own the Batman Forever Graphic Novel, the soundtrack CD & a small batmobile from the movie at home. I love them so much.

Joel also made the film Veronica Guerin in Ireland which stars Cate Blanchett in the title role. He made some powerful remarks in a newspaper interview some years ago about the criminals who killed her in her time as a major crime journalist in Ireland. Joel had said these words to The Irish Times in 2002.

I'm not worried about anything except doing my job. I'm not worried about what criminals think of us. I have other fish to fry. This is an attempt to try to really do honour to Veronica, and to try to do justice to her story.

Those comments made me respect him a lot more now that he is gone. R.I.P. Joel. We will miss you.

My favorite film of his is "Batman Forever". That was important to me as a kid and I still love it unabashedly.
