I feel extremely confident that this is going to suck. Live-action anime adaptations already have a very low batting average, plus MiA has the extra challenge of featuring children as leads and a very dark tone. So you'd need really good child actors and a director who can work well with kids, but any Hollywood film with kids as the leads is almost guaranteed to be aimed at children, so the tone that the manga is known for is gonna be thrown out the window. There's no winning here.

The only decent anime/manga adaptation is Casshern (Casshan) but even that one is rife with spotty acting and now severely dated CGI. |

Hollywood announces projects like these all the time and most never even get past their initial press release. Akira, Attack on Titan, Full Metal Panic, The Promised Neverland, One Piece, Robotech, and Your Name come to mind. All I’m trying to say is you shouldn’t take stories like these as gospel until they’re actually being filmed. For what it’s worth, Alita ruled.

You could also never find live action kids as adorable as the anime characters - and the fact that they're adorable is a bit part of the emotional punch the anime has when bad things start happening to them. Of course, anyone with half a brain would know all this, but this is Hollywood - add them all up and, together, they still don't have half a brain (and even less creativity). |

Or they can take a total different route and create a side story that is not from the manga or anime, but is still full of new creatures and adventures. This side story doesn't have to be as dark as the manga/anime, and kids can still enjoy it.
![]() Sony has done this before with Smurfs: The Lost World. ![]() |
