When playing a disc with a 7.1 track:
r
2 rear channels will be combined into the one rear speaker.

When playing a 5.1 disc:

rear L&R channels will be combined with, and output from, the L&R surrounds.

I'm not familiar with that specific receiver, however I think most if not all of them can use the surround back speaker as a mono back surround (if you set up the reciever accordingly); meaning 7.1 will take the 2 back surround tracks and make 1 back surround track out of it.

For 5.1 it depends wether you like things like PLII (personally I don't). Plus you would have to find out if your receiver can apply DSP modes on anything else than DD or DTS (in case you use a PS3 for example that is set for PCM output over HDMI).
