Default Savage Weekend

Will it ever come back in print? I would like to see it in better quality as the version streaming on Epix is VHS quality. Interesting campy drive in exploitation. I was disappointed that the cool looking grim reaper character on the cover does not appear in the film anywhere.

I hope it does. I got a copy from a Kino sale last year before it went out. To me this is a five star movie and total hidden gem.

For sure. Dig your profile pic, still waiting on Without Warning from Kino too!

Kino likely won't ever reissue it, and I don't see another label picking it up, so you probably won't see another release. It is pretty reasonably priced on ebay right now.

I see. Have you seen the Blu-ray? How’s it compare to the stream? The stream is terrible imo I hope that’s not what the Blu-ray looks like.

I haven't seen it. The review said it's probably best it could look given the limitations of the source. You can see some screenshots with the review to see if it's similar to what you saw on Epix.

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation is most certainly the best this public domain title is ever going to look on home video, with Scorpion Releasing doing what they can with a problematic source. Damage is evident, and scratches and speckling remain. And there's a fine layer of vertical lines that sustains throughout the viewing experience, but, again, they're very faint. "Savage Weekend" looks very filmic, with pleasing grain and a nice refreshing of colors, finding primaries appealing and greenery passably buoyant. Skintones are also ample and true. Detail is generally quite good for a softly shot feature, bringing out particulars on the parade of nude bodies, while the masked killer is explored with rubbery textures. Delineation isn't a concern, with low-lit encounters defined to satisfaction.

The bluray looks terrific! Much better than any other source I've ever seen. A copy can still be found $20-$30 on ebay. Get one while you can at that price.

This is so much sleazier, grimier and more atmospheric than I remembered it. Great slasher overall. I know it’s probably a pipe dream, but I would’ve loved to see this on a 4k uhd disc. Heck, VS did in fact release Paulsen’s “Schizoid” on 4k, after all, which he directed just one year later. Seems like something that’s right up their alley, if they could procure the rights…..

I like that line "particulars on the parade of nude bodies." Indeed. Fun role for William Sanderson.

I still think fans of the film should start humping VS's leg to consider this title for a 4k uhd!!

Would anyone know if the version released on Blu-ray is the uncut version with the sex scene in the boathouse intact?

I've an old Paragon VHS release of SAVAGE WEEKEND and there's two notice-able things about the Paragon tape.

#1: Director DAVID PAULSEN's name has been edited out of the opening credits. The print utilized by Paragon is missing director/writer Paulsen's name as the opening credits roll.

#2: The sex scene in the boathouse isn't there; there's a Dutch VHS release of "Savage Weekend" that features this scene, but it's a PAL-format tape and I don't have it.

I'd be amenable to buying a used Blu-ray of SAVAGE WEEKEND if it's thankfully uncut. I hadn't thought about this movie in years, but today it popped into my mind and I thought to check out the 2015 BD and see if it's a complete version of the movie. I can't tell from the write-up; the picture quality looks quite nice for such a low-budget feature.

SAVAGE WEEKEND and DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE! would make an utterly sleazy double-bill!

Actor DAVID GALE (1936-1991), who was born in England (!), later appeared in the RE-ANIMATOR movies and died in '91 at age 54.
