About time this gets a release. This one interesting "horror" film, and I still remember watching this in college in a small room thinking to myself, what did I just watch? Can't wait to revisit as it's stuck with me for nearly 20 years.

At the rate it’s going, it looks like Discotek will beat Third Window Films to release.

One of the best Japanese films ever made. Bought the DVD blind back when it came out and was taken aback by how fascinating it was. Winter 2023 is a long wait. Wish they'd make it a UHD, but I'm thrilled this is finally getting an upgrade. Who knows when Third Window will proceed with their's. Noriko's Dinner Table is also needed from someone.

It's not UHD because it was shot on Super16, effectively making 4K a pointless upgrade over HD. It would also need very heavy grain management in order to make an HDR grade work, and this movie is so grainy I don't even want to think about how hard it'd be to manage it properly. It's already such a massive improvement over the old masters that I think regardless, fans of the film will be very pleased with how it comes out.

For that matter, I had no idea Third Window was releasing it too. We're doing our own completely in-house restoration ourselves of course, so I wonder if they're doing their own too? Or if they'll just be using our HD master when it's finished?

Ah, this brings back memories of when I was a high school/college edgelord and was buying all the EXTREME japanese horror movies I heard about. Got DVDs of this, Audition, Battle Royale, and Ichi the Killer (and had friends that had Gozu and I forget what else).

This one was always a disappointment after its attention getting intro and sorta creepy first half. It completely loses me in the bowling alley with the musical number. I basically hate the movie for that segment and I don't think the ending completely makes up for it. I'd sorta be interested in revisiting it cause it's been well over a decade now.

Third Window mentioned the main reason they licensed it was because someone in the US was remastering it, so it sounds like they will be using your HD master.

Huh, well what do you know. If that's the case, I'll be very happy that UK friends will also get to see the fruits of our labor for this film!

Am I correct in that this won't be released until over a year from now? I thought I read winter 2023.

Isn't it unusual to announce so far in advance? Couldn't issues like rights, licensing, not getting the transfer expected, etc. Happen during that time?

I have seen items announced so far in advance eventually being canceled later. Would hate for that to happen here.

Are you sure? Because this site says Winter 2023 is Dec 2023 - Mar 2024 which is what I originally thought as well.

"Winter" refers to the anime seasonal calendar, which is what we go with since Discotek primarily releases anime. It indeed refers to the early months of the year.

Also, in order to not cause any confusion when delays inevitably occur, we refrain from posting specific months or dates until the disc is done and street dates are 100% finalized. That's why we go with seasons rather than anything more specific, especially when just announcing new titles for the first time.

Early 2023 would be the most understandable way to write it, and gives a little leeway in the event that it gets delayed (like into Spring)

If this is a good release, I hope they hop on Noriko as well. Would be awesome to have them next to each other.

The restoration for Noriko would be interesting considering it was shot on miniDV.

It’s hard to say if the original DI for it still exists. With the tools that exist now, AI upscaling may be the ideal way to go similar to Janus’ restoration of Inland Empire.

Speaking of J-horror, wonder if we’ll ever see Angel Dust, even on regular DVD?
