They just are going "to hell with it" with these movies now.

Getting Moonbeam City vibes. Just more violent.

I recently watched the first three entries. They were decent enough, and obviously more respectful than the live-action films, though it's hard to imagine how they can continue with the story-line. Probably why these are getting more stand-alone-ish and going in weird (but fun) directions.

I think the third one was

[Show spoiler]a bit of a spinoff of Kano's MK11 ending

so they're definitely going more single spin-off directions after the disaster that was Battle Of The Realms.
