Update: Unfortunately there is notable QC issue with this release. The film The Awakening of the Beast is missing subtitles starting around 30 minutes into the film. Arrow are offering a replacement program for the release.

Thank you for your patience while we resolve the issues with this release (FCD2451/AV536). Sadly, there was a fault with the subtitles on the Awakening of the Beast (Disc C) which were introduced after the discs had been fully QCed. To resolve the issue, we will be implementing a disc replacement programme for this affected disc. We apologise and understand how frustrating this must be.

Please be aware that replacement discs will ship from the week commencing February 19th (if not before), you will receive a confirmation email when your shipment is being organised.

A: The subtitles on the Awakening of the Beast disc stop at around 33 minutes.

Q: I have multiple copies of Inside The Mind Of Coffin Joe, will I receive multiple replacement discs?

A: You will receive the number of replacement discs matching the number of copies bought on your order. Please make sure you have all applicable proof of purchase details before speaking to customer service.

Q: What counts as a proof of purchase?

A: A copy of your order confirmation from your retailer. Please make sure that product and order information are clear and that we can identify this proof as unique to your order, i.e. name and order number.

Q: What can I do if I no longer have my proof of purchase?

A: Please write the date and your full name on the face (picture) side of your Disc C – Awakening of the Beast disc and attach the photo to your message with the requested information, the date and name must be written directly onto the disc itself. This will count as your proof of purchase.

Q: I’ve applied, where’s my disc?

A: Unfortunately for this, we can’t send shipping notifications. Replacement discs shipping to the UK will be untracked. All other shipments will be tracked but not visible on your Arrow account. Cultural icon, anti-establishment statement, sadistic lord of carnival horror! With his iconic long fingernails, top hat and cape, Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe) was the creation of Brazilian filmmaker José Mojica Marins, who wrote, directed and starred in a series of outrageous movies from 1964 to 2008.

An unholy undertaker in search of the perfect woman to propagate his bloodline, Zé do Caixão made his screen debut with the first Brazilian-produced horror film, At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. Three years later, his quest would continue in This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse, with Zé embarking on an even more brutal campaign of terror, aided and abetted by his hunchbacked assistant. The Strange World of Coffin Joe, meanwhile, is an anthology of three short horror films featuring a strange dollmaker, a necrophiliac balloon seller with a foot fetish, and a psychotic professor involved in sadistic rituals. Sex, perversion and sadism abound in The Awakening of the Beast as a psychiatrist experiments on four volunteers with Lsd in this surreal examination of 60s drug culture.

Diverging from horror toward satirical black comedy, The End of Man sees a naked stranger emerge from the sea to perform miracles in a nearby town and become a modern messiah whose deeds will affect the whole world. Rarely-seen sequel When the Gods Fall Asleep continues this blackly comic trajectory as our messianic cult figure sets out to right wrongs, expose corruption and end social unrest. The Strange Hostel of Naked Pleasures brings Zé do Caixão back to the screen as the proprietor of an isolated guest house where, on a dark and stormy night, an eclectic group of strangers seek shelter. In Hellish Flesh, Dr George Medeiros is a brilliant scientist, but a neglectful husband whose wife takes a lover and plans to murder George for his fortune, but the doctor is only disfigured and returns with a plan for revenge! Meanwhile, in Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind, the colleagues of a psychiatric doctor driven to insanity by nightmare visions of Zé do Caixão enlist the character’s creator, José Mojica Marins, to convince the patient that Zé does not exist - but all is not as it seems! Finally, in Embodiment of Evil, Marins returns to the role that made his name one last time, as Zé do Caixão emerges onto the streets of São Paulo in 2008, haunted by ghostly visions and the spirits of past victims, and still in pursuit of the woman who can give him the perfect child.

Newly restored from the best available elements and packed with new and archival extras, Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe is a love letter to one of the great iconoclasts of horror, who forged his films in the face of military dictatorship and religious censorship to become Brazil’s national Boogeyman.

I'm familiar with these movies by reputation, but have never seen them. $100 seems like a decent price for a 10 movie boxset. Are these worth a blind buy? Are they films that demand repeat viewings or would it be a one and done box set?

I've seen the films on disc 1 and 2. They're quite interesting, with some gripping overwrought imagery and Marins has quite the presence when he is playing his Coffin Joe character. But I would not call them good blind-buys, they can be indulgent and demanding a bit of patience. I would describe the films I've seen as Jodorowsky meets HG Lewis (but better than that sounds). If you can, try out any of the first 3 listed films.

This is a great description! And the movies are as good as that sounds (it sounds pretty good to me, lol)

EDIT - Haha, no wonder I thought this was a good descriptor - I wrote something similar way back in 2006 in a review for Finis Hominis (aka End of Man)!

The cast would seem to be entirely composed of non-actors which, along with the static cinematography, gives the movie a rough and tumble kitsch value that’s reminiscent of an H.G. Lewis production. But it’s an H.G. Lewis production with the ambition of an Alejandro Jodorowsky.

I have literally no clue, and my only familiarity with Coffin Joe is hearing others wish for him on blu. I went to youtube to play the first film in this set. I didn't even make it a minute or two before determining I need this, and took a few more minutes to tear myself away because I was captivated but not wanting to spoil my HD experience. It looks right up my alley. As for the delay, I'm a bit disappointed but holy hell was Black Friday a scorcher this year, so a bit of breathing room for my wallet is welcome. I'm excited to tear into this when it arrives.

Not familiar with these, I looked up the ratings of each. 6.5 to 7.1, prob average 6.8. There was one I could not find. Not a lot of reviews, but that's relatively high for this many films
