Blu-ray Samurai

![]() ![]() Nice to see this great director get more love especially after EO giving people a chance to see he's still relevant. Listed as all-region on Diabolik. Walkover (Walkower) Jerzy Skolimowski’s autobiographical second feature, shot in a series of superbly orchestrated and choreographed long-takes, presents a tale of a disillusioned young boxer and his romance with a girlfriend. Inspired as much by jazz composition and Skolimowski’s own poetry, the wonderfully kinetic Walkover is a landmark of 1960s cinema. 1966 Cahiers du cinema / #2 Best Film of 1966 Barrier (Bariera) Skolimowski’s intoxicatingly inventive masterpiece about man and the modern world, is ostensibly a “boy-meets-girl” romance, but emerges as a devastating allegory of the contemporary Polish psyche, a film about national schizophrenia and the barrier between generations. Dialogue 20 40 60 (Dialóg 20-40-60) Extras: • Walkover and Barrier presented from new 2K restorations by Wytwórnia Filmów Dokumentalnych i Fabularnych (WFDiF), Poland. • Dialogue 20 40 60 presented from a new 2K restoration by the Slovak Film Institute. • Introductions to Walkover and Barrier by Polish cinema expert Michał Oleszczyk. • Audio commentaries on Walkover and Barrier by producer and film historian Michael Brooke. • Jerzy Skolimowski’s rarely seen early short films, newly remastered in HD: The Menacing Eye (Oko wykol, 1960); Little Hamlet (Hamleś, 1960); Erotyk (1961); Your Money or Your Life (Pieniądze albo życie, 1961) • Booklets with new writing on the films by filmmaker, author and Polish cinema specialist David Thompson. • New and improved English subtitle translations. • World and UK premieres on Blu-ray. https://www.secondrundvd.com/comingsoon.html https://hmv.com/store/film-tv/blu-ra...ski-collection https://diabolikdvd.com/product/jerz...ay-all-region/ |

Used to be only a few Skolimowski films on Blu-ray - Deep End, The Shout, Moonlighting, Essential Killing and looks like The Lightship had a French release. Over the past year that’s doubled with Identification Marks: None/Hands Up!, this boxset and EO! Great to see Second Run releasing some Polish director sets like with Wajda’s War Trilogy.
His Criterion closet video is essential - he talks about being slapped by Miloš Forman, and his sadness over many of his contemporaries having passed on. |

They're not that bad. Success, in particular, is pretty underrated, albeit far from perfect. |

Amazon is still having issues listing the pre-order and now the release date is delayed. This is going to get lost in the 23/24 gap when best-of lists are being prepared. I think Second Run should aim to release their boxsets in November because this seems to happen (to worthy releases) every year.

I’ve had a numerous deliveries from SR to Australia over the years and never had damaged goods. I can’t recall the actual packaging they use but I remember my Hungarian box was well packed.
