If you have waited this long Yes. Wait. Pick up a upcoming Profile 2.0 player like the Panasonic BD50 which should be out soon.

In the meantime start buying those BD movies

or think about a PS3 which will become profile 2.0.

I use mine solely for movies as well as many other members on here, so try not to think of it as just a "videogame" machine. Its more like a wireless super media center that plays bluray movies. And a very good one at that.

I have two PS3s but unless it gets a fw upgrade to play DTS HD MA wouldn't it be better to wait for the Panny or other dedicated player with more audio capability.

well, I guess it would be based on personal preference, and equipment. To me, 1.5mbps dts still sounds amazing, so I cannot say I am completely disappointed by the lack of support...on the other hand if you're an audiophile and dts-hd master is a must, I can understand. (and still a good chance the ps3 will gain support).

But the main reason I would use a PS3 over any other player is its internet/media center capabilities. All wi-fi.

Im looking to get my second ps3 for the bedroom and not only would it play blurays, but I could surf the net right from my bed (yes im lazy). Or could stream my downloaded music or videos from the PC into my room.

Im not saying the PS3 is the best bluray player out...but I am saying it is very reliable with excellent bluray sound and picture quality, packed with other abilities that stand alone players do not provide.

it's upto you... if you're patient enough, get the Panny... If you really can't wait, get a PS3.

The PS3 will become 2.0 via firmware, so get one!
It loads super fast and has internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD and possibly DTSHD down the road! If you dont have a new audio receiver though, you can only get the newer HD audio with a standalone, but like Crackinhedz said, DTS at 1.5 mbps sounds pretty nice IMO..... Then you also have a great media center with a PS3, SO, unless you just DONT want a PS3, or you are concerned about the DTSHD or old receiver doing lossless audio, get a PS3!

I have to agree with everyone that thinks the Lossy DTS core sounds fabulous. I've never been disappointed. That said, there are some nice 1.1 players out now with DTS-MA decoding and/or bitstreaming, so if 2.0 is not important to you, there is no need to wait.

The web features on HDDVD sort of convinced me it's probably not for me. Though it may appeal to a younger, more connected crowd.

DTS HD MA = JOY! I have my BD30 for a month now and will never go back to PS3 (TrueHD and DTS HD bitstream is very nice) Shoot'em Up in DTS HD MA 7.1 is orgasmic!

Frist of all, new to the forum and first post here. I recently went to a few local stores to get some info and I couldn't believe the lack of knowledge in the sales reps. Blu ray and HD DVD has been out for a while now but nobody knew what profile 2.0 or BD Live was, not to mention being unable to answer many of my other questions. Very frustrating.

Anyway, back on topic...

Anyone else have any advice on waiting? Will new versions such as Panny's BD50 be better at playing new blu ray discs and also older SD discs? I don't see myself making much use of everything that will come out of profile 2.0. I'm more concerned about the player being able to play my current collection of SD discs (without the pause/stopping problems mentioned in some of these threads) as well as future BDs.

Also, what does everyone think will happen in terms of price. A recent article about Wal-mart dropping HD-DVD indicated this will likely result in a drop in price on blu ray equipment and discs because demand will suddenly rise.

If I could get any player out there/coming soon, I'd go with the Panny BD50. It's got support for the standard profiles and supports bitstreaming of all the HD audio formats. Otherwise the PS3 would be my first choice.
