Blu-ray Samurai

After a year of combating a pandemic with relatively benign symptoms, a frustrated nation finally lets its guard down. This is when the virus spontaneously mutates, giving rise to a mind-altering plague. The streets erupt into violence and depravity, as those infected are driven to enact the most cruel and ghastly things they can think of. Murder, torture, rape and mutilation are only the beginning. A young couple is pushed to the limits of sanity as they try to reunite amid the chaos. The age of civility and order is no more. There is only "The Sadness".

I have the Capelight release, which somehow came out over two years ago, so I don't see myself double dipping here; however, I hope this opens the door for more Shudder content on 4K. I would absolutely love to see both Terrified and When Evil Lurks get some physical 4K love.

I'm more interested to see what they'll do with HDR. Will they stick with HDR10+ like the German or will we get DV. |

I didn’t see DV or HDR10+ listed in the photo of the back of the case. Just HDR. Could they include DV without labeling it?

Honestly, I thought this was better than Train to Busan.

It’s certainly way more over-the-top entertaining and creative for gore-horror fans. Feels more claustrophobic, up-close and personal. It’s a ruthless onslaught. Brings a healthy cornucopia of re-watchable shock value along with it. I found Train to Busan to be a very samey, predictable by-the-numbers retread, and it really didn’t engage me or bring anything fresh or interesting to the genre, for my tastes. I also really didn’t take any interest in the characters. The Sadness by comparison is so unpredictable and tumultuous that it’s hard to look away from the rapidly unfolding debauchery. I don’t think anyone could ever call it “just another check-the-boxes zombie flick” with a straight face.

Good. Wouldn’t the world be a boring place if we all liked the same things
![]() I find Busan the more fun movie of the two, which is probably what I want from my zombie movies, which is why Dawn of the Dead is ultimately my favourite film in the genre, because it’s just so bloody fun. The Sadness is definitely a wild ride, and always good to see plenty of OTT gore effects in these films. Hopefully we’ll see some more decent Asian zombie films in the future (not sure if there are any good looking ones on the horizon?) |
