New Xbox Live will help Microsoft avoid Blu-ray
Is Microsoft preparing to launch a new Xbox Live to cater for more focused digital media delivery? Credit: Xbox Live.

By Stevie Smith Feb 19, 2008, 15:08 GMT

Beside Toshiba’s official announcement of HD defeat, there’s really very little ‘other’ news currently doing the rounds in gaming circles. However, here’s a little nugget of rumour which, if true, could be related to the end of HD DVD and of direct benefit to Xbox 360 users.

Current speculation spinning free of the HD DVD circus suggests Microsoft could be preparing to introduce a standalone Blu-ray player now that its HD DVD player has been rendered obsolete.

However, in a statement regarding the fall of Toshiba’s HD format, the American software giant has commented that: “We will continue to give consumers the choice to enjoy digital distribution of high definition movies and TV shows directly to their living room,” which perhaps points to a widening of the current Xbox Live Marketplace and its SD & HD movie and media downloads.

That whole part about "avoiding BD" was not part of the press release. That is that websites comments that you posted on there. ALso, of course they are working on a new system, do you think that Sony doesnt have a team looking at a new system right now also? please.

M$ probably thinks BD is the plauge and just wants to say away from it. Just make a BD drive for the smart 360 owners.

Check the BDA/SONY BD standard and what it needs...

note the PCM references... somehow i dont think an addon will come and downloaded films are only rented.

I dont quit when you added comments to the article that were not part of the press release. You are just as bad as an hddvd fan boy, you post FUD just to make yourself feel better. Ah and I love how you edited your original post to remove that part now. Obviously you knew you were wrong.

riiiiiiight. That part of the article is not bolded on the original site. YOU did that. So you altered it to look like MS was saying they were going to avoid BD. Thats not the posting of news.

Xbox Live is a fraud:

-Microsoft rents Level 3 servers for content. They donīt have their own servers and this is why they force the people to pay in Xbox Live only for playing.

-The connection is P2P, in other words, if you have the best PING then you will be the server. People is paying for being the server.
