I think this is the 3rd release the others being a French/Dutch and German (had at least 2 releases). I've seen the France release and it looks great compared to the UK DVD.

Great film seen it in the cinema and loved it.

2/5 for the film? Man...that's rough. Love this flick even if I don't watch it much. May have to pop it in soon.

Dr. Svet's review https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Man-B...378315/#Review

I think it's a great film. I watched it at the cinema and remember thinking I'd never seen anything like it. Poelvoorde's character and Poelvoorde himself have never left my mind.

The conceit of the film was sort of repeated recently with Danny.Legend.God.

Acclaimed at the time of its release, but of course not by this bloke. I swear if everyone said something was black, he'd say it was blue. He also regularly presents reviewer bias which I don't believe should be permitted. A film critic's evaluation isn't supposed to be about their personal feelings but a judgment of the film and how well it executed certain aspects. It is here that he fails as a film critic.

I've always got to stick up for Dr. Svet as he never replies to these attacks.

His opinion is just his opinion it is not the law.

He does good work and I assume like all reviewers here they're not being paid millions. I appreciate all reviews.

His recent review of Venom (1981) was spot on https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Venom...370580/#Review

It's just a balance of his opinion and your opinion.

If people want they can post their own reviews too.

I don't understand his comments on the film but I just ignore it.

Watched mine a few weeks ago, still a solid 5/5 Black Comedy, I owned it on VHS in the 90s, which is how I discovered the film. I could still recite some lines in French "Le cinema" from memory. Shame there's no interviews with the guys 30 years later. Worth keeping the Criterion DVD if you have it, for the extras.

Here is the problem with the B-R dot com review calculations. We all know that Svet's opinion of the film itself is going to be insane. That's fine, people are entitled to their own ridiculous opinions.

However, that rating of 2/5 should NOT be used in calculating the overall score for the disc. No one comes to this site for opinions about the content of the film in reviews (unless you're looking at the theatrical reviews, which, why would you do that?), the vast majority come to see if the disc is any good. As such, the overall score should only be an average of the scores for the technical aspects of the disc (which are obviously subjective, especially when it comes to extras).

A disc like this one with a 4/5 video, 4.5/5 audio, and 3.5/5 extras score would get an overall score of a 4/5. Whereas plugging in the inane 2/5 "movie" score somehow tanks the overall score to a 3/5, which is baffling, since even plugging in this value and calculating a new average would result in an overall score of 3.5/5.

This suggests that the overall score is either (a) completely made up by the reviewer in question and not subject to the laws of mathematics at all, or (b) the overall score gives extra weight to the "movie" portion of the score in the calculation.

Well, I bought the Imprint edition as I have not watched it before.

Surely, the film cannot be more tasteless than Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom.

I agree that people are entitled to their opinion, and his article is well-written anyway.

There's nothing tasteless about Salo...

The film has great taste!

I think it got an NC-17 in the US and Australia's English-bred censors fiddled with it too.

I don't think it's high on the Offensometer™ maybe a 2 for me when it was released now I'm not so sure but it's nowhere near Ex Drummer (another great Belgian film).
