Arrow JVC's New 2025 NZ700 & NZ500 Long Throw Projectors

Below is the link to the new firmware update for the NZ500 and NZ700.*

This firmware upgrade simplifies the user interface for pixel alignment and a few other minor glitches.

Default Review: JVC DLA-NZ500 4K HDR Laser Video Projector

Another low price native 4K projector from JVC that is 35% smaller and since less raw materials are used the manufacturing costs are lower. Still no Dolby Vision HDR, and only HDR10+. Dolby Vision HDR is not offered on LCOS and LCD projectors and can only be found on the latest DLP projectors. Both JVC and Sony offer true native 4096 x 2160P light engines on their LCOS projectors, whereas all or most all other so called 4K consumer DLP and LCD projectors use pixel shifting from a native 2K light engine (imaging chip) to simulate 4K quality. No Blu-ray 3D support will be a deal breaker for some people when looking at the NZ500. The JVC NZ800 offers the legacy Blu-ray 3D feature.

Select quotes from article

“One feature missing from the new NZ500 projector is the ability to do 3D. If 3D viewing is important, then you’d need to step up to JVC’s NZ800.”

“The NZ500 gives you the ability to either front-, rear-, ceiling-, or shelf-mount the projector.”

“The NZ500’s new design has an overall volume reduction of 35% compared to that model, and, as mentioned, clocks in as the world’s smallest native 4K laser projector currently available.”

“This is all due to a complete component design, including a new optical unit, lens, BLU-Escent laser, and new processor/scaling engine. JVC also reversed the air intake and exhaust, with the NZ500 pulling cool air in from the front and exhausting it out the back of the projector, which allows the unit to sit closer to the back wall and not have any ventilation issues.”

“Of course, the key selling points of laser are a long life with virtually zero maintenance, with these models having an estimated 20,000 hours of operation to 50% brightness. Beyond longevity, a laser light source offers other benefits over lamp-based projectors, such as consistent brightness and color across its lifespan, less turn-on “stress” on the light engine, and the ability to instantly turn off to deliver a true black and infinite dynamic contrast ratio.”

“In addition, the NZ500 also supports HDR10+, a dynamic HDR format akin to Dolby Vision. HDR10+ had previously been reserved for a handful of UHD Blu-ray disc releases, however, it was recently announced that Netflix would start streaming content coded with HDR10+ metadata, so this feature could become a compelling purchasing driver.”

“The takeaway isn’t that the now $19,000 Sony looked better in most cases, but rather just how good the $6000 JVC did in comparison. (If you’re in the market for a projector over 15 grand, definitely audition JVC’s NZ800 as well!) At this price, performance, and feature set, the JVC DLA-NZ500 sets a new benchmark for sub-$10,000 projectors and should be on a very short list of projectors to consider at that price.”

The JVC DLA-NZ900 for $29,999.95 is JVC’s flagship projector.

However, the JVC DLA-NZ500 is a good entry level projector for $6,499.95 as long as one does not need legacy Blu-ray 3D support. Good to see JVC go 100% Laser based projectors and no longer making lamp based projectors.

Default JVC and Sony need 60,000 hour and 20,000 hour Laser light source options

This is a technological and price breakthrough for JVC to make a selection of native 4K LCOS projectors with a Laser light source that lasts 20,000 hours. It is awesome that JVC has a good selection of 20,000 hour Laser light source projectors that cost between $6,499.95 to $29,999.95. That means these projectors Laser will last around 10 years depending on how many hours one watches the projector everyday. In the ideal world JVC should develop a 60,000 hour Laser light source projectors with a price range of $16,499.95 to $39,999.95. Use the exact same model hardware design but for an extra $10,000 the consumer could have 60,000 hour laser light source projector with the 60L at the end of the model number (If the 60L is not at the end of the model number then $10,000 cheaper and the standard 20,000 Laser light source model, just a suggestion). While some flat panels can last up to 100,000 hours before half brightness is reached, the average flat panel screen has a half brightness rating of 60,000 hours. Therefore, if there was more projectors on the market with 60,000-hour rating, the projector would match the half brightness life span of a flat panel screen. It's too bad the Laser light source is not a replaceable module design, but by the time the Laser burns out in around 10+ years, its time to purchase a new and improved projector instead of trying to get a repair shop to drop in a new compatible Laser light source. People buy a projector for the bigger and better picture quality when compared to the lower quality flat panel screen. (Plasma TV’s last around 60,000 hours, 30,000 to 60,000 hours on LCD, and OLED 40,000 to 75,000 hours before half brightness depending on model number). While leaving one's electronics on 24 hours a day 7 days a week like a computer will make the product in general last longer since constant running temperature is always the same, however when it comes to projectors and flat panel screens they last longer when they are turned off because of the light source lifespan issue. But some people have ran their flat panel screens 24 x 7 for several years by never turning them off (mostly businesses in a 24 x 7 retail store setting like a 24 hour bar or coffee shop).

Since around the year 2017 there have been higher end DLP projectors using 60,000 hour Laser light sources. Both Sony and JVC need the 60,000 hour laser light source option on all their existing models for an additional $10,000 charge. Then consumers can choose either the 20,000 hour model or the 60,000 hour model. Someone that wants to use the projector for 20+ years might go with the 60,000 hour model, but someone that wants to save money and only wants to use the projector 7 to 10 years might go with the 20,000 hour model.

Some DLP projectors that are native 8K cost over $500,000. Not sure of the price on the Insight Laser 8K (Gen II), however I like its specs. Several hundrend thousand dollar projectors mainly still use 20,000 hour laser light engines. Projectors get really expensive when they use 60,000 hour laser light engines.

Even this top of the line Insight Laser 8K (Gen II) by Digital Projection is still only 20,000 hour laser life span.

https://www.digitalprojection.com/en...ser-8k-gen-ii/

This high-end Sony LCOS (SXRD) VPL-GTZ380 4K Laser projector for $88,500 is designed with up to a 20,000 hour maintenance free laser light engine.
