Default Universal and the dreaded combo disc

I was a dual supporter, pretty much the only reason was because I already had an Xbox 360 so I purchased the add-on when it came out, and I own a 60gb PS3, so I supported both but leaned heavily towards Blu Ray.

My question is this, I refused to own a single title that was a "Combo Format" disc and I know Universal was the main villian in that concept, what are the chances that they try to continue to do that with Blu-Ray?

They can't Blu-ray can't do combo. The only thing they can do is put a DVD in the case (dual place cases) and tadam combo...

I think there was a Blu-Ray/DVD combo tested but they couldn't get it to work properly so it was dropped. I might be wrong hopefully someone can come in and correct me if need be. To answer your question, there won't be any combo discs. (Thank God)

Combo discs aren't necessary in the long term. Eventually DVD players will be phased out by CE. Mark my words

I hope not. If I want a DVD, I'll buy one. If I want a Blu-ray, then that's what I want... not some outmoded technology clapped (at my expense) to the other side.

I don't think Universal would go back down that road again.

Also I own some discs these days that are BD-50 on one side, DVD-9 on the other. They have been out for over a decade now.

A few anime titles from Japan came with both a Blu-Ray disc and a SD at a pretty hefty price tag. Other threads have talked about that on here. To me it makes absolutely no sense for separate or combo discs to be released. What good does the SD do you if you have HD and vice versa? Why produce it if it's not going to be watched? And why should I have to pay more for it?

I like your avatar of the wheelin' dealin', kiss stealin', limosine ridin', jet flyin' son of a gun known as Ric Flair. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I can see the problem with BD/DVD combo discs, you see, the data for BD sits approximatly 0.1 mm from the surface of the disc while DVD sits 0.6 mm from the surface. For HD DVD, it was easy as it used a similar manufacturing process to DVD. If they do plan on getting BD/DVD combos out, it will take some time, but in the end, it will only prolong the switchover from DVD to BD.

I think the chance's are very very low, so don't even worry about it. We won't be "boiling" our Blu's

JVC had a working hybrid disc that had DVD9/BD25 all on the same side. It used a material that allowed the red laser to pass through the BD layer into the DVD9 layer, while the blue laser was able to read the BD25 layer no problem. The demonstrated the disc on a prototype Blu-ray player and on a DVD player at IFA Berlin in 2005.

No studios asked for the disc, so it hasn't yet been worked on. They could get it to work if they wanted to.

Propaganda. The initial JVC tests had a problem with dual layer DVD combos (DVD under Blu) on DVD players. Single DVD layer combos worked fine. But, further development was abandoned because the studios expressed no interest in the format.

The reason for combo on HD DVD wasn't any strategic goal. It was tactical. The market research showed people would be confused into thinking HD DVD played on HD upscaling DVD players. The studios didn't want themselves or the retailers to have to deal with that issue.

The fact that many said Blu-ray was a bad name because the consumer wouldn't understand what it meant was beneficial to this problem. So, no need for an insanely more expensive form.

HD DVD/DVD combos cost at least 3-4x DVD to make, and perhaps far more after yield problems and combo playback issues are factored in.
