Looking at this whole format war has got me thinking. The conclusion I have come to is that I don't think it is possible for Blu Ray to lose this war. The reason for this is the PS3.
I don't think even the most hardcore of the HD-DVD fanboys would disagree with me saying that the PS3 will greatly outsell any of the HD-DVD players. Since there is a BR player within the PS3, that right there has just upped the install base for BR pretty considerably. Whether they want it or not, PS3 owners now have a BR player and odds are they also have an HDTV. It is only a matter of time before they buy a couple BR titles to see what the big deal is. They will probably buy the big titles like Xmen, MI3, and Superman Returns, and when they see how great they look, they will proabably continue to buy more titles every so often. Microsoft did the only thing they could do to compete, and that was to release an HD-DVD add-on to the 360. The difference is that people now have to BUY the HD-DVD format. They have to want it so much that they are willing to pay $200 plus the price of movies. The PS3, right or wrong, gives you no choice. Since HD-DVD isn't catching on like they had hoped, and since the install base for BR just shot through the roof, I simpy cannot see how BR wouldn't win by default if nothing else. The only chance I think HD-DVD has is to significantly lower the price of the players AND titles, and I just don't see them doing this. Am I missing something here? |

The longer this goes, the harder I see it for HD-DVD to continue. HD-DVD started off at a high point and has been going lower and lower ever since. Blu-ray started off weak, and has been catching up and showing its advantages ever since.
HD-DVD had great PQ from the outset. A player that was reasonably priced and enabled a lot of people to jump into pre-recorded HD on an optical format. There was not a great need for disc space as most extras were standard def, and the movies didn't come with advanced codecs, etc. Still, the discs approached the HD-DVD limit of 30gb. How is HD-DVD been doing as of late? It's a snoozefest. With the exception of Universal a Blu-ray owner will be able to get every movie available to HD-DVD in the very near future. Microsoft has had to go to great lengths to ensure VC-1 was capable of ensuring quality with a lower bit rate. I'm not sure they have. Toshiba is still the only player in the game. The first gen Toshiba player is discontinued and the newer players will carry a higher price tag for a more capable player, while the lesser price player will be fairly stripped down. Blu-ray is realizing its potential day by day. 50gb discs. Great PQ using various codecs. Uncompressed audio on a great many titles. More studio support than HD-DVD. Hardware manufacturers including, Sony, Pioneeer, Samsug, LG, etc. BD-Live will be coming, as will further interactive features. Dell has introduced a Blu-ray laptop. The HD-DVD talking points have been falling away. Each day another one gets disproved the fanboys go into a frenzy. I still feel confident about Blu-ray. It needs a bit more marketing, but the name is becoming more popular. |

Firstly we have enough of these threads, secondly this should be in general discussion as it is not specific to a film, thirdly to answer your question, yes, blu-ray should win by default.

I'll have to agree with you. Ps3 will outsell standalone HD-DVD players, that's a given. Ps3 retailing for 500 and 600, with 500 being the cheapest Blu-Ray player in the market anyways.
Not to mention, then we have many celectronic company's on Blu-Ray standalones as well. |

Double threads merged.
Rnk23: Don't double clone/post threads, if you think or want your thread should be moved, ask the mods (or post in thread), That way all replies to your topic fall in the same place. And to answer your question, the simple answer would be yes, but in real life things somtimes get complicated and take longer, as deMentorS abound to suck the life out of their competing format ![]() |

When I posted this in the other section, someone said it should be posted here instead. That is why I posted this here as well.
Won't happen again... |
