Hi, I have an Onkyo 605 and am replacing my center speaker and rear surrounds with better speakers, will I need to run the calibration mic again? I was wondering what it actually does, does it just set the output dB for each speaker and set the speaker distances? Or does it adjust some equalizer in the amp? I can manually adjust the speaker dB outputs myself if thats all it really does...

my 705 has audeyssey miltieq xt. from my manual it says
With the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Audyssey MultEQ XT function can measure the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crossover frequencies, and the distance from each speaker to the listening position and calculate the optimal speaker settings for your listening environment automatically. so i would run it |

When I first got my 605, I decided that my house is never, ever quiet enough to run an effective speaker setup program, so I adjusted all the speakers myself, and the effect was astonishing (esp. after a couple of years of a lower-power 5.1 Pioneer). Then one day, the family was actually out of the house, and I had the opportunity to run the microphone set up... Holy crap. I didn't know I could afford a system this great. ![]() |

I only used the Audyssey as a base for my setup. It provides a good place to start, but I ended up giving it some manual tweaking. Even if you are doing manual though, I would still run the Audyssey after you get the new speakers in. Then have fun adjusting!

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I'll give it another shot when I get home. I think it did a pretty good job the first time I ran it but I had to tweak the output dB for one of the speakers and change the position of one of them. Just dont want it to get worse if I run it again...

Whats that going to accomplish? Allowing me to make sure they all output the same amount of sound?

When you test your speaker calibration, try this - while playing blu-ray in LPCM 5.1, see if you can change from Direct to Multich listening mode. Go back & forth, see if it sounds better to you in Direct or Multi (Multich will show the Audessey light on the receiver display, Direct does not). Let us know which you like better!

theres also different versions of the audessey, some better than others and a post like that isnt really good for much either if you dont really explain to a "true beginner" how to get the most out of thier speakers. theres also other variable like room demensions and brand of speakers that make a difference

Oh, no, nevermind what I said. BD Player required for PCM/uncompressed audio, DVD doesn't have it.

It was perfectly silent inside my apt when I first ran the test, and outside like a few blocks away someone made some noise and the onkyo mic picked it up and stopped the test, i could barely hear the noise myself so the onkyo mic must be super sensitive.
