Talk about perfect timing - we are discussing the percentage of sales Blu-ray was getting, and an article appears on The Hollywood Reporter.
Of course, I've made a chart with the data: Code:
Title Release Percentage PotC At World's End 120407 3.7 Simpsons Movie 121807 2.8 Michael Clayton 021907 5.5 30 Days of Night 022608 8.9 No Country for Old Men 031108 9.8 Hitman 031108 12.6 |

It's a good trend.
It'll be more interesting to see data for the next blockbuster title for more of a fair comparision with PoTC At Worlds End. For example, something like National Treasure: Book Of Secrets when it's released. Or even the breakdown for I Am Legend would be interesting. Last edited by blu2; 03-28-2008 at 01:20 AM. |

I'm not surprised about hitman being a larger percentage of the whole. It was originally a video game, and then a movie, so of course you will have a large section of the gaming community (ala PS3 owners) interested in it. What is more telling is the NCFOM since that is not a gaming movie.

The point of the story was that the percentages jumped BIG TIME after the war ended.
Titles that everyone expected to clean up for BD, like Simpsons and At World's End, disappointed. Now a movie that really isn't even close as an HD feast (NCFOM) is doing very, very well compared to DVD. At this point, 10% market share is extraordinary. And I think it shows a lot of fence sitting has ended. I Am Legend will be interesting. Especially with the $18.95 pricing. If the Dark Knight is a great movie, and Warner prices it at $18.95, we probably will see the first million seller for Blu. Gary Last edited by dialog_gvf; 03-28-2008 at 04:30 AM. |

I think it's pretty clear that consumers want a high def disc format. I think there's been a bit of a build up of demand. A lot of people are sitting there going... so I got my 5-15 HD channels what's next? If you look at an HDTV and are looking to get a return on your investment... only having 10-20% of your available content in HD is not all that great.
I think more people than are given credit for it go: "My upscaled DVDs look okay but not as good as the ones I see on TV..." Good movies on HD*Net movies, HBO, etc. really are the best advertising... there's a lot of stuff on there at 1080i that just blows away upscaled video. I remember Bill Hunt posting an article when DTheater launched. He got a bunch of angry and concerned e-mails from readers asking whether this meant that DVD was about to be replaced with tape again (gasp).
Those in the know, including those enjoying it, knew it was a transitional format. But, the fears being expressed were telling. There is an element that sees a new format as inevitably threatening the old, and they want to transition simply to be "future proof". Those that purchase a lot of discs, especially so. Gary |
