I want this title tomorrow, so I shall grab it at a retail store. It's the price of impatience.

That's what you're dropping your $40 on? Because one review says the presentation quality is good?! I did a random google, and out of 10 reviews I clicked on the movie received no higher than "2/5" or a "D" This is why film companies keep producing horrible, horrible movies!

It might be a good transfer but the movie is awful, kind of like Ultraviolet.

Even HDD gave this a 5 star for P/Q....is this their first 5 star rating for BD?

Yeah. Peter Bracke said he couldn't find a single thing wrong with it. It screams reference, too bad its not something too many people will be picking up.

Yes it is their first 5 star PQ rating for a Blu-ray exclusive disc.

My jaw dropped when I read the review... I wasn't going to pick this one up, but I read Chad's review and my girl also wants to see it, so I guess I have to pick it up now.

Otherwise, I'm giving 'The Covenant' a five-star video rating simply because I can't find a single thing wrong with it.
Peter, what's wrong laddy?

This is a SONY release/25GB/MPEG-2/LPCM with a 5.0 PQ rating.

"The Wall Comes Down"

"The Wall Comes Down"

It must really rate a 5.5 on HDD's scale

A better title for this movie would have been "Abercrombie & Witch," because everyone looks like they're from one of their catalogs.

Sony has openly expressed their desire for the new, more advanced video codecs to mature a little more before switching over. MPEG2 releases like this lend strength to their claim that less compressed still is better if disc space can support it. This ranks among the finest high def presentations I've seen. I can't recall any VC1 title that looked quite this transparent to film. VC1 often tends to look a bit more processed on screen sizes as large and revealing as the one we use, with slightly less detail, or softness in places that doesn't quite look natural to the source. About the only hint of a drop in resolution I found hear appeared related to CG effects or a natural distortion of the lens.
This resulted in the "Home Theater Spot declares war on VC-1..." thread on AVS.

ill rent this one first. I have a couple of good "show off the format" movies. Now I need to make sure I get movies that dont suck ass. I have a bad feeling about this one.

I watched the movie last night, not really much of a decent flick... but I have to say it's one of the best video transfers especially when it's dark in many places.

Hmm, I saw fragments of that thread and it is basically people who know what they are talking about Chad/Gary Murrell trying to educate people that grain is a good thing and not everything should have that processed non-film-like feel to it, but they weren't having it.

I think that the latest I saw was that AVS has declared war on HTS. With HDD's Peter Bracke recently giving 5/5 for a BD title and praising MPEG2's ability to cope with HD material on a BD25 they may not have many review sites left!

Not in the same league of course, but have you seen the trailer for 300? All of the men of Spartan looks like they came out of Muscle Mary magazine - except that they are "masculine" looking.

I'm sure Renny Harlin fans as well as the actors' fans enjoyed the movie. I probably won't be buying The Covenant right now (might wait until it comes down to US$13?) but I'd definitely watch 300 and its Muscle Marys.
