Default Plasma break-in?

Is it really necessary to run a break-in dvd on a new plasma?

It's a personal preference, that's all.
If you're a smart viewer that understands what NOT to do with plasma, then it's not necessary.
If you want to get through the break-in period quickly, the break-in DVD is a good, convenient solution.

You can read a LOT more about it on AVS.

Or if you want to play alot of video games for extended period of time on your plasma, and lessen your possibility of getting image retention than yes it can be a good deal.

Also instead of buying a one time use DVD, try setting your TV to Discovery Channel HD.

I've never heard of this before. Is this only for plasmas, or LCDs as well?

Plasmas, LCD's have no image retention issues.

I had never heard that the Discovery channel could replace a break-in dvd. Why is this? Also, are you talking about Discovery HD Theater or the actual Discovery channel?

1) Why can it only be used once
2) Why would anyone pay for it when the creator has it available to download for free in VIDEO_TS or .img files?

What do you do if you do not have a DVD burner?

Buy a Blu-ray drive!
Who doesn't have a DVD burner? They're like $49!

Get a friend to burn it for you. Blank DVD's are 23 cents.

I think the burn-in dvd is only for the first 100-200 hours of use. I'm trying to find out more about it since I will have a plasma soon and want to do everything I need to to prevent IR/burn-in.

Question was asked does this pertain to plasmas or LCD's, and I answered that this pertains only to Plasmas, as LCD do not have image retention issues.

As for the one-time use break in DVD for your Plasma, what is your misunderstanding of that statement? Are you going to break in your plasma more than once? Obviously no, and yes I understand you could save that DVD for future plasma TV or pass it on to a friend, but for your plasma it is a one time use.

Discovery Channel Theater HD is the channel I was talking about, check out your AVS forums, they talk about using that channel as a break in channel on there, no long period static images.. moving images most of the time, decent break in type.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Also, what exactly does the break-in dvd show?

I think it was me you meant to reply to.
The plasma DVD, much like Dicovery HD or even a white noise screen, can be used to even out pixels if you do go through a period of extreme viewing or forget to turn off the TV before heading to Grandma's for the week-end.

Dude, it's time to read the site!!

http://www.eaprogramming.com/downloa...nload_main.htm

The explanation of what it is, what it does and how it does it is all there.

This file is a zipped up Nero Disc Image (nrg file). Unzipped it is pretty large (~700 Mb) but zipped it is very small (2 MB). This disc image should be burned to a regular CD-R. The disc image is a Super Video CD so your DVD player needs to be able to play SVCDs’. It is basically a set of 20 images that are 720p native resolution. The images are full screen colors so that the entire screen is 1 color at a time. The colors go from a white to a dark grey in 5 gradients, white to blue in 5 gradients, white to green in 5 gradients and white to red in five gradients. The images change every 30 seconds and the disc goes for approximately 16 hours (double check that number when you open the image in Nero). The disc has been created like this so that the DVD players loop functionality does not have to be relied on. Furthermore there is no menu for this SVCD so there is no fear of a menu coming up and being stuck on the screen.
There are hundreds of posts at AVS about this disc and about break-in. Give it a read through, it's educational and helpful.

Very good summary.

Basically, most of the manuals and websites recommend very disciplined viewing for the first 100-200 hours to minimize the risk of burn-in. This includes turning down levels on the TV and limiting viewing with black bars or static images for that period.

If you want to watch carefully for that period of time, that is perfectly safe and probably the route most follow. Heck, average Joe consumer probably just plugs it in and watches without any though of break-in. If you watch 2 hours of TV a night, that break-in period would be nearly 2 months.

However, using a break-in disk allows you to get past that 100+ hour period quickly. I just bought my fist plasma last Friday. I am sitting at work, and my plasma is running the break-in disk at home right now. I'm over 50 hours already, and would be even higher if the TV wasn't in our bedroom so we turn it off at night (I suppose I could cover it with a blanket or something). I want to get the break-in over so I can set the colors where I want them and watch what I want when I want (won't be any gaming and very little with static images in our case).

The break-in disk can be downloaded for free and runs for 24 hours if left untouched. It is simply a full screen of one solid color. The color changes every 30 seconds - white to blue to green to purple to red to.... You get the point (and I made up the color order - I can't say I've studied it).

So is this particular disk required? No. Does it simplify and shorten the break-in period? IMHO, yes.
