Default PS3 Latest update question regarding audio

Hey buddies!

I´m looking for a new Home Theater; so, with the latest PS3 update, all I have to do is connect my PS3 to the Home Teather (of course one available with DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD) trough HDMI and I will get the best quality audio?

How should I need to set up my PS3, as PMC or Bitstream? or if is through HDMI none of this options?

I´m kind of confused!

Any help will be welcome!

Thanks in advance!

I am by no means an expert but most threads I've looked at suggest bitstream. Someone who knows more please enlighten me I'm eager to know this as well.

you don't need a receiver capable of dts-hdma or truehd since the ps3 will decode it for you anyway and convert it to PCM so if you want to save some cash you can buy a cheaper hdmi receiver without these codecs

Actually, I have a really nice Samsung Home Theater but I only pass the audio by Optical.

So, If I buy a new Home Theater and can pass the audio through HDMI but the HT is not DTS-HD or DolbyTruHD the PS3 will codec the audio as PCM?

-How should I set up the PS3 as Bitstream or as PCM?

-Since the audio will be codec, do I´m going to hear the same quality that the optical gives me?

Nutshell:

The new codecs (PCM 5.1, TrueHD, DTS-HD) HAVE to be passed via HDMI. Optical won't cut it (not enough bandwidth). You need a receiver capable of receiving PCM audio.

The new codecs will need to be sent from the PS3 via LPCM. They can't be bitstreamed. The PS3 will decode the audio as PCM and send it over HDMI in that form.

Ok, so let me see if I get it:

-Buy my new HT with HDMI (even if not have DTS-HD or DolbyHD)
-Plug the PS3 into HT via HDMI
-Plug the HT to the TV via HDMI
-Set up the PS3 audio as PCM
-Ready for hear all new codecs and the old one.

Do I missing something?

Thanks for your kindly help?

Yes; again, make sure it accepts HDMI audio.

To hear the DTS HDMA or Dolby TrueHD, set the audio to HDMI-LPCM. Set it to auto detect and you're done.

Provided you have a receiver that can handle multichannel audio input via HDMI. Older HDMI receivers don't do this so check before you buy.

No. Optical gives you DTS at 1.5 Mbps and DD at 640kbps. Dolby TrueHD is at least 3.5Mbps and DTS HD-MA is at least 1.5 Mbps (when there's no sound). Optical output cannot give you anything higher than 1.5Mbps.

A thing about buying receivers now is that even though you can save money buying cheaper HDMI receivers with multichannel audio processing, it does not mean those receivers can properly pass through 1080p or even 1080p24 video signal. You also have to think about if you're going to get a standalone BD player in the future on top of your PS3.

Map out your home theater upgrade path according to your budget before you open up your wallet.
