Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the sensor when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth with EDR, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quadband GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture?

2 problems.

Price is retardedly off of the chart. 499 for 4 gig? 599 8 gig? 100 more for 4 more gigs? Cmon. 399 for the 8 gig, and you got something there.

Cingular/AT&T Contract. Makes it worthless, as they are the worst providers ive ever had the displeasure of having. I absolutely LOVE verizon and theres no chance im switching for a friggin phone, even if the thing blew me while i was sitting in traffic.

Yeah, the pricing in relation to size is outrageous. If it was 299/399 then I'd jump at the 299 easily.

I can't say anything bout Cingular; they're far better than when I had Verizon in my area. I couldn't wait to be done with Verizon and have had nothing but flawless service since.

Of course, this is why I avoid the "I see PS3's on the shelves" thing, cause it's different from area to area and person to person.

(I get really good comcast service too, sorry)

Mostly people desperate to see the PS/3 fail. And hardly important in the movie format wars. The PS/3 could "fail" and BD would still dominate because of it.

What I was hoping for today was an announcement for a widescreen touchpad iPod without the phone and other crap. But hopefully they'll use this as the design for future iPods.

i'd be willing to bet that one will be out. obviously the phone was the big boy, but the technology will carry over to other product lines.

Forget the Iphone. Buy it when the battery life is at 10 hrs and the gigs are around 20.
