I would go with the Onkyo. It is 1.3a HDMI compliant and decodes all the hidef audio codecs. It isn't THX certified (the 705 is) but that really doesn't matter as most movies aren't thx. I have the 605 and love it. If you have a ps3 it will decode all the hidef audio into pcm and then decoding in the receiver doesn't matter; go with the Pioneer. I personally would go with the Onkyo as it is more future proof. The Onkyo 705 has been going for a little over $500 lately...i'd buy that if you can afford it. Depends really on if u want the receiver to decode the hidef audio or not...if so the Onkyo...if not the Pioneer.

also onkyo's tend to sound brighter then other brands, which means you would need speakers that were on the bass side. pioneers and yamaha's tend to sound warmer. |

While I've never owned an Onkyo receiver, I do have three Pioneer A/V receivers. A 500 series (around $180), and 800 series (~$280), and an Elite 92TXH ($1,170). I'm very happy with all three. I find them to be easy to use, love the MCACC setup, and all three sound buttery smooth. The Pioneers are easy to use as well. My wife and three kids (the youngest who is 6) have no trouble using them, and no trouble setting them up for TV, DVD, etc. I also like the dialogue enhance mode and the midnight mode as well as the various DSP modes. The Onkyo may have similar features, but like I said, since I've been very happy with the three Pioneers, I haven't had a reason to try anything else. You may also find that certain brands of speakers sound different thru each receiver, so that may be a consideration as well. Not sure of your experience level, but this short article may be helpful as you decide: http://www.finishabasement.com/home_...a_receiver.htm. |

Neither. Get the Pioneer VSX-1018TXV. It's coming out in June and will be able to decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. It will be the first non-Elite receiver to be able to that and have HDMI 1.3 connections. It'll retail for around $600, but you'll be able to get it online for around $500.

i'll tell you one thing what you get with receivers these days and the great prices to go along with it,you can't go wrong.
from what i've seen these new receivers from onkyo, pioneer, and yamaha with the new audio codecs are cheaper then receivers without the new codecs. looking at the back of these receivers you get all the old features as well as the new! |

I am DYING to upgrade to lossless audio on Blu-Ray.
My budget would be around $500 (more or less). I see myself having 2 options. Option 1: Upgrade to a receiver that has HDMI switching and can decode lossless codecs. Option 2: Upgrade Blu-Ray player to a model that decodes the lossless codecs and output via multichannel audio outputs. What would be the advantages or disadvantages of either option? As the post title states, I would choose the Oppo BDP-83 for my Blu upgrade and the Pioneer VSX-1019AH as the receiver upgrade, possibly the Onkyo TX-SR607. I've picked these as they fall within my budget ($500). Being new to these codecs, I'm not sure if I'm forgetting to leave anything out of this equation. All comments much appreciated. My current gear: Display: Panasonic TH-50PZ80U Receiver: Marantz SR7300 Blu-Ray: Sony BDP-S350 Speakers: Def Tech BP-2002 (front) Def Tech C/L/R 2002 (center) Def Tech BP1X (surround) |

three Onkyo receivers and couldn't be happy. Right now I have the 5700 hooked and is amazing, also there highest end model. Normally goes for $2600 but you can get it New Egg foe $1899 this weekend (pus no tax.) Highly recommend.
I have a 905 sitting aroud (last years high end). If you're interested let me know. I was going to set it up in the bed room but that s a bit of over kill! Tom |

Personally I wouldn't buy either one of them. I used to have the Onkyo, and it's a good receiver, but neither of them have pre-outs so you can never add an amp later. I would look at the Yamaha RX-V663 or Marantz SR5003 because they do have pre-outs.
